Havaldar Samunder Singh

Havaldar Samunder Singh was born in a farmer’s family in the year of 1960. He completed his primary and secondary education in his village. Since his childhood, Havaldar Samunder Singh was very keen to join the army. As soon as he completed his education he applied for the job in Army and he got selected.

 

In the year of 1980, Hav Samunder Singh joined the army and was recruited into the regiment of The Grenadiers, a regiment known for its valiant soldiers and numerous battle honours. Hav Samunder Singh was just nineteen years old when joined the army. He excelled in sports also.

 

After joining the army he was posted to various places and took part in various operations along with his battalion. During 1999, When the Kargil war had begun,  Hav Samunder Singh’s unit was deployed to the border areas of Rajasthan, as it was a desert specialized battalion. There his unit performed their duty well and returned back without any casualties to their peacetime unit location at Pamagarh of West Bengal.

 

Op Rhino (Assam): 23 Dec 1999

 

During 1999 In the month of November, Hav Samunder Singh’s unit was posted into Assam (Tejpur) for the counter-insurgency operation against various militant groups in Assam such as ULFA, NCLM, NDBF etc.

 

On 23 Dec, Hav Samunder Singh’s unit the armed patrol of Sikh Regiment was on their regular duty for the area domination. In the meantime, Some of the Militants targeted the army patrol team and looking forward for them to attack. While the unit was on the way back to their unit location. The heavy firing was accompanied by the artillery fire from the area indicating that it was a pre-planned dastardly attack. In this process, Hav Samunder Singh was fatally injured and later succumbed to injuries and laid down his life in the service of the nation.

 

Havaldar Samunder Singh is survived by his wife Pushpa Devi, daughter Mithlesh Kumari and two sons Maj Anuj Sikawar, Engr. Vipan Kumar Sikawar. Hav Samunder Singh’s youngest son Maj Anuj is serving in the same unit of his father.
