Major Rajiv Kumar Joon AC SC

Major Rajiv Kumar Joon was born on 5th December 1969 to Shri Dharma Singh & Srimati Shanti Devi in Gadikhari village of Rohtak District in Haryana. Maj Rajiv lost his father in 1980 ,when he was 11 years old and his mother single-handedly raised him up. Eldest among his four sisters and two brothers , Maj Rajiv shouldered all the responsibility of his family during his growing up years. He was sincere, responsible and brave right from his childhood.

Maj Rajiv completed his schooling in a Military School in Kunjpura in Karnal and his inclination towards military life got firmed up there. He went on to join the National Defence Academy in Khadakvasla and got commissioned on 8th June 1991 into the Grenadiers Regiment. He joined 22 Grenadiers and evolved into a dedicated and committed soldier. Maj Rajiv Kumar joon was soon recognized by his seniors for his bravery and combat skills.

Anantnag Operation: 16 Sep 1994

During 1994, Maj Rajiv’s unit, 22 Grenadiers was deployed in J & K for anti insurgency operations. On 16th September 1994, Maj Rajiv Kumar Joon’s unit was ordered to lay a  siege and carry out a search operation in a village of Anantnag district. The order was based on specific intelligence reports about presence of terrorists in that village. During the operation Maj Rajiv  noticed two terrorists hiding in the house taking advantage of the gap between the door and wall of the house. On being challenged the terrorists started firing indiscriminately and wounded one of the soldiers badly.

A gun-battle ensued under the direction of Maj Rajiv and he ordered his battalion to continue firing to distract them. Meanwhile the terrorists jumped to a basement and fired at the search team. Having assessed the situation, Maj Rajiv Kumar then crawled towards a loop hole at the exterior of the basement and slid two hand grenades into it and fired at them. Consequently, one of the terrorists was killed but the other terrorist kept firing at the troops.

Maj Rajiv then crawled through the loop hole and stood up directly in front of the other terrorist. The terrorist took advantage of the dark and and had a shot at Maj Rajiv injuring him badly. However Maj Rajiv  refused to back down, chased and fired at the basement, killing the terrorist. A large quantity of arms and ammunition was later recovered from the hide-out of the terrorists. Maj Rajiv later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. For his raw courage, indomitable spirit and supreme sacrifice Maj Rajiv was awarded the nation’s highest gallantry award during peace time, “Ashok Chakra” posthumously.

Major Rajiv Kumar Joon  is survived by his mother Srimati Shanti Devi, his brothers and sisters.

The citation for the Ashoka Chakra :

On 16 September 1994, a search party under Major Rajiv Kumar Joon carried out cordon and search operation in village Arijan Dessar in district Ananthnag of Jammu and kashmir.

At 1300 hours Major Rajiv Kumar Joon discovered two militants hiding inside a house in a wall between the door and the calling of the room. The hiding militants were persuaded to come out but they sprang out of the hideout firing indiscriminately all over the room and at the search party located at the doorway, injuring a member of the search party.

Major Rajiv Kumar Joon, realising the gravity of the situation, immediately ordered his search party to. cover and engage the militants. The trapped militants jumped into the basement of the house  and brought heavy volume of  fire on the search party from on opening. Major Rajiv Kumar Joon, sensing that his comrades could not engage the well-entrenched militants effectively from their location, crawled up to the loophole on the outer side of the basement at great risk to his personal safety, lobbed two hand grenades into the loophole, and fired into it killing one hard core Pakistan trained militant. The other militant continued firing from the corner of the basement with renowed vigour.

at this moment, Major Rajiv Kumar Joon risking his life for the safety of his comrades daringly approached the loophole to effectively engage and neutralize the concealed militant. In this closest of the close encounters, the Major and the militant came face to face with each other. The latter having the advantage of darkness, fired at Major Rajiv Kumar Joon injuring him grievously on the throat damaging his chest.

Major Rajiv Kumar Joon,  grievously  wounded and profusely bleeding, refused to move back and in a final bid sprayed bullets all over the basement  killing the militant, In this valiant act of extreme courage and sacrifice, Major Rajiv Kumar Joon single handley killed both the armed militants were later identified an Rashir Ahmed padar allias Nur-Ur- , self styled company commander of Hizbul Mujahideen and the             of        cabinet Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and

I first time met with Major Rajiv Kumar Joon with some chocolates when he was studying in 12th standard at Sainik School Kunjpura. He was of a shy nature. He registered my contact details in Army records for emergency purposes. It was Saturday when I received Trunk Call from Indian Army about his sacrifice. I rushed from Delhi to Rohtak for his mother to Delhi Airport. His mother was equally brave. I salute him for his sacrifice for the nation.
