Kupwara Operation: 05 May 2005
During 2005, Maj Salman Ahmad Khan’s unit 6 RR, was deployed in Kupwara district in J&K and was engaged in operations against the militants on a regular basis. The Kupwara district of Kashmir had been the hotbed for local as well as Pakistani militants, who were incessantly seeking the opportunity to destabilize the peace in that area. Maj Salman’s unit had to maintain a high state of alert at all times to counter the infiltration attempts. There were numerous operations launched by the unit to flush out the terrorists. On 05th May 2005, the security forces unit had received credible information from the intelligence sources about the presence of terrorists in a village of Kupwara district. After analyzing the situation a decision was taken by the security forces to launch an operation to flush out the terrorists. Consequently, the team of soldiers from 6 RR unit, swung into action and launched the operation in the wee hours of 05 May 2005.
The assault team reached the site and cordoned off the suspected area in that village. On being challenged the terrorists opened fire at the security troops and a fierce gun battle ensued thereafter. Maj Salman killed one militant in the gun-battle. Thereafter he saw another militant fleeing and chased him. During this time other militants hiding from a house targeted Maj Salman with automatic weapons. Maj Salman got seriously wounded but despite his injuries he lobbed the grenade at the second militant and killed him. However he later succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom. Maj Salman was a gallant and committed soldier who laid down his life in the service of the nation, following the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
