Naik Randhir Singh SM

Naik Randhir Singh Janghu hailed from Doltabad village of Gurgaon district in Haryana and was born on 04 Apr 1960. Son of Shri Kailash Chander and Smt Pyari Devi, Nk Randhir Singh had four brothers, Mahender, Rajender, Bijender, and Khilare, and a sister Jagwati as his siblings. He wanted to serve in the Armed Forces since his childhood and eventually joined the Indian Army on 06 Dec 1978 after completing his school education at the age of 18 years. He was recruited into the 4 Mahar Battalion of the Mahar Regiment, an infantry Regiment well known for its dauntless soldiers and numerous battle exploits.

After completing his training, he served in various field units and developed into a tough and professionally competent soldier. He served in the trouble-torn J&K area and also became part of 'Operation Samaritan' and 'Operation Trident'. After serving for a few years, he got married to Ms Sunita Devi and the couple had two sons Jitender Kumar (Born on 11 Nov 1983) and Hemant Kumar (Born on 28 March 1987). By 1987, Naik Randhir Singh had put in about 08 years of service and had gained experience in working in diverse operational environments with challenging terrain and conditions. During the IPKF operations, Naik Randhir Singh’s unit was sent to Sri Lanka as part of IPKF to undertake operations against the LTTE.

Operation Pawan (Sri Lankan Operation): 14 Oct 1987

During 1987, Nk Randhir Singh was serving with his unit 4 Mahar battalion, which was deployed in Sri Lanka as part of IPKF. After the induction of Indian forces in Aug 1987 in Sri Lanka, as part of the Indo-Sri Lankan accord, the militants were supposed to surrender but the dreaded LTTE backed out and unleashed war on Indian forces. Initially, only 54 divisions of the Army were inducted but the escalation of the operations brought three more divisions 3, 4, and 57 into the conflict. Randhir Singh's unit was deployed in the Jaffna area and got involved in numerous operations against the LTTE militants.  The unit was tasked for one such operation on 14 Oct 1987. Nk Randhir Singh was made part of the team that was assigned to undertake that task.

Based on the information from intelligence sources, the 'C' company of 4 Mahar was tasked to neutralize the threat from some LTTE militants hiding in North Kopai about 10 Km northeast of Jaffna. On 14 Oct 1987, Nk Randhir Singh and his comrades reached the suspected area and cordoned off the area.  However, the LTTE militants got to know about the movement of Indian troops and surrounded them.  At 0730 hours when the Number 9 Platoon of "C" Company was surrounded by the militants occupying the house nearby, Naik Randhir Singh with the 'Rocket Launcher' blasted one house and made way for the platoon to advance. The militants in a retaliatory move, fired a burst at Naik Randhir Singh injuring him severely. Despite the severe injury from which he was bleeding profusely, Naik Randhir Singh again fired with his Rocket Launcher causing panic among the militants. He also fired from the riffle of another wounded soldier causing more casualties among the militants. Eventually, the platoon under the cover of his fire reached the objective. However, Naik Randhir Singh soon succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. Nk Randhir Singh was a brave and committed soldier, who laid down his life at the age of 27 years in the line of his duty. Nk Randhir Singh was given the gallantry award, “Sena Medal” for his courage, devotion to duty, and supreme sacrifice.

Nk Randhir Singh Janghu is survived by his wife Smt Sunita Devi, sons, Shri Jitender Kumar & Shri Hemant Kumar, brothers Shri Mahender Singh, Shri Rajender Singh, Shri Bijender Singh, Shri Khilare Singh and sister Smt Jagwati.
