Captain Umang Bhardwaj was born on 24 March 1977 into a proud military family in Garauli village of Gurgaon district, Haryana. He was the younger son of Colonel Kunwar Bhardwaj and Smt Shiksha Bhardwaj. He received his schooling at various Army schools, moving with his family as his father was posted across the country. He completed his senior secondary education from Army Public School, Delhi Cantt, where the values of discipline and service were deeply ingrained in him. Selected for the National Defence Academy, he was unable to join at the time, as his parents—already having another son serving in the Army—were reluctant to send him as well. Though he struggled to understand their concern, Umang, ever the devoted son, respected their wishes. Yet, his aspiration to wear the uniform never faded.
He went on to graduate from Delhi University and pursue an MBA, where, during his final semester campus placements, he was offered a lucrative corporate position with attractive pay and benefits. Despite strong parental expectations, he declined the offer, choosing instead to follow his calling. Speaking candidly to his mother, he said, “Mummy, I am not cut out for sale-and-purchase jobs. I want to be on the front line, in combat fatigues.” True to his resolve, he joined the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, and on 11 December 1999, was commissioned into the Army Service Corps of the Indian Army, turning a lifelong dream of serving the nation into reality. As his first assignment, he was deputed to serve with 7 Jat Battalion of the illustrious Jat Regiment, renowned for its valour, grit, and battlefield excellence. Life in uniform perfectly complemented his personality—energetic, disciplined, and deeply devoted to duty. During his service, Captain Umang Bhardwaj was admired for his leadership qualities, sense of responsibility towards his men, and a pleasant, motivating presence among peers. His seniors recognised in him a bright, promising officer with a deep love for his duty and immense potential for a distinguished military career.
Poonch Sector Operation: 19 Nov 2002
In 2002, Captain Umang Bhardwaj's unit 7 Jat was deployed in the Poonch sector of Jammu & Kashmir, a region marked by persistent terrorist activity along the Line of Control. Captain Umang was actively engaged in demanding counter-insurgency and counter-infiltration operations as part of Operation Rakshak and Operation Parakram. Having just returned from a brief period of leave and resumed his duties, his unit received specific and credible intelligence around midnight on 18 November regarding the movement of heavily armed terrorists attempting to infiltrate into the Valley through the Rajouri–Poonch axis. Recognising the gravity of the situation, the unit swiftly planned a search-and-destroy operation to intercept the infiltrating terrorists. Captain Umang Bhardwaj, who was serving as the Ghatak Platoon Commander and Adjutant, was entrusted with the responsibility of leading the assault team. Demonstrating resolute leadership and operational acumen, he moved out immediately with his men under the cover of darkness to establish an ambush at the likely infiltration route.
As the terrorists approached the ambush site, Captain Umang displayed exceptional battlefield composure by holding his fire until they came within close proximity. At the opportune moment, he personally initiated the ambush, eliminating the leading terrorist instantly. What followed was an intense and ferocious close-quarter battle in which Captain Umang, displaying extraordinary courage and tactical skill, neutralised six terrorists despite heavy enemy fire. During the encounter, one terrorist attempted to flee through a nearby nala to escape. Disregarding his own safety and fully aware of the risks involved, Captain Umang rose from cover and pursued the fleeing terrorist across the rugged terrain. In the ensuing exchange of fire, Captain Umang was grievously wounded after being hit by multiple bullets in the chest and thigh. Undeterred by his injuries, he continued to fight with determination until the last terrorist was eliminated, thereby ensuring the complete success of the operation and thwarting a major infiltration attempt across the Line of Control.
Captain Umang Bhardwaj succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of 19 November 2002, laying down his life in the line of duty at the young age of 25. His actions during the operation exemplified exceptional valour, inspiring leadership, and unwavering commitment to duty. For his conspicuous gallantry, indomitable spirit, and supreme sacrifice while fighting terrorists, Captain Umang Bhardwaj was awarded the Shaurya Chakra (Posthumous).
Capt Umang Bhardwaj is survived by his father, Colonel Kunwar Bhardwaj (Retd.), mother, Smt. Shiksha Bhardwaj, elder brother Lt Col Rakesh Bhardwaj.
