Captain Ajay Singh Rana SM

Captain Ajay Singh Rana was born on 17 December 1974 in Mamoon, Pathankot district of Punjab. He was the son of Subedar Major KC Rana, an Army veteran, and Smt. Shama Rana. Growing up in a family with a strong military background, he imbibed discipline, dedication, and a deep sense of patriotism from an early age. He studied at various institutions in Pathankot, Bathinda, and Jalandhar, as his father’s military service required frequent transfers. An academically bright student, he went on to complete his Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree and further pursued higher studies, earning a Master of Arts (M.A.) from Shimla. Though he achieved success in academics, his true calling lay in serving the nation in uniform. Guided by this aspiration, he joined the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, as part of the 68th Short Service Course (SS-68) and was commissioned into the Indian Army in 1999.

On 04 September 1999, he was commissioned into the 60 Field Regiment of the Regiment of Artillery—one of the Army’s most formidable combat support arms, renowned for its powerful field guns and heavy weaponry.  Known as "Rinku" at home, Captain Ajay Singh Rana soon proved himself to be a dedicated soldier and a capable officer, demonstrating excellent field-craft skills and professional competence. Beyond his military abilities, he was known for his warm, affable nature and genuine care for others, qualities that earned him the admiration and respect of both his peers and subordinates.

 Operation Parakram(J&K): 02 Sep 2003

In 2003, Captain Ajay Singh Rana’s unit was deployed in the Batalik sector of Ladakh as part of Operation Parakram, a large-scale mobilization of Indian Armed Forces along the western borders. The unit was entrusted with crucial operational and engineering tasks in this sensitive high-altitude region, and Captain Ajay Rana played an active role in their successful execution. On 2 September 2003, while on observation post (OP) duty in the Batalik sector of Jammu & Kashmir, Captain Ajay Singh Rana came under intense enemy shelling. Displaying remarkable courage and leadership, he stood firm in the face of heavy fire, shielding his comrades and leading the resistance. In the ensuing battle, he inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy and forced them to retreat.

Even after being gravely injured in the exchange of fire, Captain Ajay Rana refused to abandon his position. With an indomitable spirit, he fought valiantly till his last bullet and last breath, continuing to repel the enemy assault despite his critical wounds. Ultimately, he succumbed to his injuries, laying down his life in the highest traditions of the Indian Army while saving the lives of his fellow soldiers. For his exceptional bravery, supreme devotion to duty, and selfless sacrifice, Captain Ajay Singh Rana was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal. His courage and sacrifice remain a shining example of gallantry and patriotism.

Captain Ajay Singh Rana is survived by his father, Sub Maj K. C. Rana(Retd), and mother Smt. Shama Rana.
