Captain Sumeet Roy VrC

Captain Sumeet hailed from Solan district in Himachal Pradesh and was born on 10th September 1977. Son of Shri Sapan Kumar Roy and Smt Swapna Roy, Capt Sumeet, wished to serve in the Armed Forces since his younger days. Nicknamed ‘Kuchi’ by his parents, he was very talented and excelled in various fields such as horse riding and Karate. He also did equally well in his studies.

Following his passion, he eventually got selected to join the Army. He was commissioned into 18 Garh Rif of the Garhwal Rifles Regiment, an infantry Regiment known for its fearless soldiers. In the very early part of his service career, he got involved in active operations, when his unit got deployed in the Kashmir valley as part of 'Operation Vijay' in 1999.

Kargil War : June-Jul 1999

During June 1999, Capt Sumeet Roy's unit 18 Garh Rif was deployed in Kargil area under the command of Col SK Chakraborty. The unit played a significant role in capturing the Tololing top during the Kargil War in 1999. The18 Grah Rifles went into the war when the Indian army did not have enough information about the exact magnitude of intrusion. Capt Sumeet Roy and his men of the 18 Garh Rifles were tasked with the recapture of point 4700 on the treacherous, icy slopes of Tololing in the Drass sector. He was part of a light machine gun commando team that was asked to recapture Pakistani bunkers along the mountaintop of Tololing. As with so many of the later operations in Kargil, this too was a dangerous mission requiring an uphill accent towards entrenched enemy posts who had the advantage of height and a bird’s eye view.

On 28 June 1999, Captain Sumeet realized that Point 4700 could be captured only if the observation post of the enemy on the cliff could be neutralized. Capt Sumeet set out with a section in the night following a covered approach at 2330 hours. He reached just below the observation post and kept observing the movement of the enemy in the observation post till 0200 hours on 29 June 1999. Captain Sumeet then planned a surprise move to overrun the observation post of the enemy. In a daredevil move and with total disregard for his personal safety, Captain Sumeet climbed up the cliff and reached the observation post. He then in a fierce hand-to-hand fight killed both the sentries on the observation post. The enemy troops were taken aback by this sudden turn of events and fled the post leaving behind a huge quantity of arms and ammunition. This action of Captain Sumeet changed the course of the battle and cleared the way for Indian Army for future victories. However, Captain Sumeet later sustained injuries during enemy artillery firing and was martyred on 03 July 1999.

Captain Sumeet displayed exemplary leadership and extraordinary courage at the young age of 21 years and became a source of inspiration for his troops. He was posthumously awarded the "Vir Chakra" for his outstanding gallantry, leadership and supreme sacrifice during the operation.
