During August 2003, Havaldar Ramappa Venkappa Mirji’s unit was deployed in poonch sector and its troops were manning various forward posts along the LoC. On 24 August 2003, Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control and resorted to heavy mortar shelling at various Indian Army posts and civilian areas. Pakistani Army was also using small arms and automatics in this indiscriminate firing.
The Indian forces gave a befitting reply to the unprovoked firing and consequently the exchange of fire continued for several hours. During the heavy exchange of fire, Havaldar Ramappa’s one of the officer and a havaldar of the same unit got shot by the pakistan troops. Hearing this Ramappa was all charged up and showed his willingness to collect their bodies and without caring much about his personal safety he moved to the field where firing was taking place. Unfortunately during the process of retrieving his colleagues’ bodies he was also shot fatally. Havaldar Ramappa was a disciplined and committed soldier who laid down his life in the service of the nation.
Havaldar Ramappa Venkappa Mirji is survived by his wife Rukmini and two sons Venkatesh and Harish.
