Lance Naik Dharamveer Singh

Lance Naik Dharamveer Singh was born on 17 July 1976 in Dhamalaki Dhani village of Khetri tehsil in Jhunjhunu district, Rajasthan. Growing up in a region known for its rich military traditions and contributions to the armed forces, he imbibed values of courage, discipline, and service from an early age. He was the son of Shri Jaimal Singh and Smt. Krishna Devi, who nurtured in him a deep sense of responsibility and patriotism. Motivated by a strong desire to serve the nation, he joined the Indian Army on 14 December 1995 when he was just 19 years old. He was enrolled on the 155 Medium Regiment of the Regiment of Artillery—one of the most crucial combat support arms of the Indian Army, responsible for providing overwhelming firepower and support to infantry and armoured formations during operations. Over the years, L/Nk Dharamveer Singh proved himself to be a disciplined soldier who carried out his duties with dedication and steadfast commitment. As he progressed in service, he established himself as a dependable and hardworking member of his unit.

During his service tenure, he got married to Ms Birjesh Devi, and the couple was blessed with a daughter, Monika, who became the pride and joy of his life. After serving several years with his parent unit, Lance Naik Dharamveer Singh was deputed to the Rashtriya Rifles, the Army’s specialized counter-insurgency force. He was posted to the 43 RR battalion deployed in Jammu & Kashmir, an area highly affected by militancy and hostile infiltration attempts. His role in this posting required exceptional alertness, tactical skill, and continuous operational readiness, as the troops frequently undertook high-risk missions to ensure peace and safety in the region.

Op Parakram: 28 Jun 2002

In June 2002, Lance Naik Dharamveer Singh was serving with 43 Rashtriya Rifles in Jammu & Kashmir, an area that was severely affected by militancy. The volatile environment demanded continuous vigilance, long hours of patrolling, and frequent counter-terrorist operations. The troops of 43 RR were regularly involved in tracking the movement of militants, gathering intelligence, and neutralizing threats to maintain peace and security in the region. During this period, credible intelligence inputs indicated the presence of a group of armed and hardened terrorists operating within the battalion’s Area of Responsibility (AOR). Recognizing the gravity of the situation and the threat posed by the infiltrators, the command decided to launch a deliberate operation to eliminate them. The mission was planned for 28 June 2002, with a team of experienced and battle-hardened soldiers selected to execute it. L/Nk Dharamveer Singh, known for his commitment and operational skills, was chosen to be part of the assault team.

As per the plan, L/Nk Dharamveer Singh and his comrades moved stealthily toward the suspected location in the Chhund sector. After establishing the necessary cordon to prevent the terrorists from escaping, the team initiated a well-coordinated search operation. The terrain was challenging, and the danger unpredictable, but the soldiers pressed on with determination and professionalism. Before long, the search party made contact with the terrorists. What followed was a fierce exchange of fire as the militants, cornered and desperate, attempted to break the cordon. Amid heavy gunfire, the soldiers held their positions with unwavering resolve. During the intense engagement, L/Nk Dharamveer Singh was gravely injured. Despite being wounded, he continued to participate in the operation with remarkable courage until he eventually succumbed to his injuries. Lance Naik Dharamveer Singh laid down his life in the line of duty on 28 June 2002 at the young age of 24

Lance Naik Dharamveer Singh is survived by his wife Smt Birjesh Devi and daughter Ms Monika.
