Lance Naik Pappu Ram Kundu was born on August 5, 1974, in Maliyar Jatt village, located in the Tijara tehsil of Alwar district, Rajasthan. He was born into the family of Shri Buggi Ram Kundu and Smt Dharam Kaur. Growing up in a humble background, L/Nk Pappu Ram displayed a strong sense of duty and dedication from an early age, which later inspired him to join the Indian Army. Determined to serve his country, Lance Naik Pappu Ram joined the Indian Army and was recruited into 20 Grenadiers Battalion of the prestigious Grenadiers Regiment, renowned for its valiant history and distinguished service in various military operations. Known for his discipline, commitment, and courage, L/Nk Pappu Ram steadily earned the respect of his peers and superiors alike.
In 2004, Lance Naik Pappu Ram was deputed to serve with the 29 Rashtriya Rifles, a specialized counter-insurgency force operating in Jammu and Kashmir. The unit played a crucial role in maintaining peace and conducting counter-terrorism operations in the conflict-prone region. During his tenure, Lance Naik Pappu Ram actively participated in several challenging operations, demonstrating exceptional bravery and fieldcraft skill.
Baramulla Operation: 17 Apr 2004
In April 2004, Lance Naik Pappu Ram’s unit, the 29 RR Battalion, was actively engaged in counter-insurgency operations in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, near the Line of Control (LOC). This area was known for frequent infiltration attempts by militants, necessitating a constant state of high alert among the troops. The 29 RR Battalion conducted regular operations to prevent such infiltrations and maintain security. On April 17, 2004, based on intelligence reports indicating the presence of hardcore terrorists in the Baramulla district, the security forces launched a mission to track them down. During the operation, Lance Naik Pappu Ram and his team encountered a group of heavily armed terrorists who had taken strategic positions to resist security forces. As the team advanced, they came under intense enemy fire. Undeterred by the grave danger, Lance Naik Pappu Ram led from the front, courageously confronting the terrorists and providing cover to his comrades.
During the intense firefight, Lance Naik Pappu Ram sustained severe injuries but refused to retreat. Ignoring his wounds, he continued to engage the enemy with remarkable determination and presence of mind. His resolute actions ensured that his fellow soldiers could safely reposition themselves and eventually neutralize the remaining terrorists. His exceptional bravery played a pivotal role in the success of the mission. Tragically, Lance Naik Pappu Ram succumbed to his injuries during the operation, making the supreme sacrifice at the age of of 29 years in the line of duty. In recognition of his extraordinary bravery, unparalleled valour, and ultimate sacrifice, Lance Naik Pappu Ram was posthumously awarded the prestigious "Shaurya Chakra" on January 26, 2005.
Lance Naik Pappu Ram is survived by his wife Smt Sharmila Devi.
