Poonch Operation (J&K) : 07 May 1990

During December 1989, Lance Naik Raj Kumar’s unit, 19 Punjab Regiment, was deployed in the Poonch district of Jammu & Kashmir, a region that had become a hotbed of militant activity. The area was notorious for frequent infiltration attempts across the border, requiring the troops to remain on constant high alert. Regular search-and-cordon operations were conducted to curb militant movements and secure the region. On 07 May 1990, 19 Punjab Regiment was tasked with one such operation based on intelligence reports about militant presence in their Area of Responsibility (AOR). Lance Naik Raj Kumar, serving with A Company, was selected as part of the team assigned to carry out the mission. That morning, he and his comrades moved out toward the suspected hideout to conduct a systematic search-and-cordon operation.

As the troops began combing the area, the militants, realizing that they were about to be surrounded, opened heavy and indiscriminate fire in a desperate bid to break the cordon and escape. A fierce and prolonged gunfight ensued, with both sides exchanging intense fire. In the midst of the chaos, L/Nk Raj Kumar displayed unflinching resolve and exemplary bravery, taking up an exposed position to engage the enemy effectively. Despite being struck by an enemy bullet, he refused to retreat or seek cover. Instead, he continued to fire with remarkable precision and determination, inspiring his comrades to hold their ground. Tragically, the grievous injuries he sustained during the exchange of fire proved fatal. Despite immediate evacuation and all possible medical aid, Lance Naik Raj Kumar succumbed to his wounds, making the supreme sacrifice at the age of 30. His steadfast courage and selfless devotion to duty remain a shining example of a soldier’s commitment to protecting the nation, even at the cost of his own life.

Lance Naik Raj Kumar is survived by his wife, Smt. Parkash Wati, his sons, Shri Kul Bhushan Kaushik (serving in the Army) and Shri Shashi Bhushan Kaushik, and daughter Ms Ritu.
