Lieutenant Atul Katarya was born on 21 February 1975 in Gurgaon, Haryana, into a family that upheld a proud legacy of military service. His father, Colonel Dhanraj Katarya (Retd), served in the Indian Army, and growing up in such an environment naturally instilled in him a deep sense of discipline, patriotism, and commitment to duty. Inspired by his father’s distinguished service, young Atul aspired from an early age to don the olive-green uniform and dedicate his life to the nation. He was the elder son of Colonel Dhanraj Katarya (Retd) and Smt. Sumitra Katarya and shared a close bond with his younger brother, Amit. Known for his leadership qualities, sense of responsibility, and willingness to take on challenges, Atul stood out among his peers both academically and personally. After completing his schooling, he successfully cleared the highly competitive entrance examination for the National Defence Academy (NDA), Pune. His years at the NDA shaped his personality further—honing his physical endurance, mental resilience, and leadership acumen. He graduated from the NDA in 1995 and proceeded to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, where he continued to excel in both academics and military training. In 1996, upon successful completion of his training, Lieutenant Atul Katarya was commissioned into the Army Ordnance Corps (AOC). After his commissioning, he was attached to the 13th Punjab Battalion, which was deployed in Jammu and Kashmir. This attachment provided him with valuable operational exposure in a field area early in his career, shaping his understanding of combat conditions and strengthening his resolve as a young officer in the Indian Army.
As a young officer, Lt Atul Katarya quickly established himself as a dynamic, courageous, and professionally competent soldier. His keen understanding of counter-insurgency operations and his ability to think innovatively made him an invaluable asset to his unit. During his tenure in Jammu and Kashmir, he undertook several challenging operations against militants in hostile and difficult terrain. Known for his selflessness and sense of duty, he frequently volunteered for high-risk missions. Within a short span of two years, Lt Atul made a remarkable impact through his bravery, tactical skill, and leadership. He was instrumental in the elimination of numerous militants, significantly contributing to restoring peace in the region. His fearless approach and unwavering commitment to his men and mission earned him immense respect among his peers and superiors alike. Lt Atul Katarya’s life, though tragically short, remains an inspiring example of valour, dedication, and sacrifice—a true reflection of the finest traditions of the Indian Army and his regiment, 13 Punjab (Jind).
Pulwama Operation: 14 Oct 1998
On 14th October 1998, Lieutenant Atul Katarya’s unit 13 Punjab received specific intelligence inputs about the presence of heavily armed militants in the Sangarwani area of Pulwama district, Jammu and Kashmir. The militants were believed to be hiding in a well-fortified location, posing a serious threat to local security and ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the region. Acting swiftly on the intelligence, the unit was tasked with launching an operation to neutralize the threat. Recognizing his exceptional tactical acumen and fearlessness in the field, Lt Atul Katarya was entrusted with the leadership of the mission. Without losing time, he meticulously planned the assault and led his team from the front—true to his belief that an officer must always share the same risks as his men. As the team approached the suspected hideout, they came under intense automatic fire from the entrenched militants. Unfazed by the danger, Lt Atul displayed exemplary courage and presence of mind, manoeuvring his troops into advantageous positions. He personally led the offensive, charging into the hideout with his weapon blazing, engaging the militants at close range. In the fierce exchange that followed, Lt Atul Katarya eliminated four militants, thereby breaking the defensive resistance of the group.
However, during the intense gunfire, Lt Atul was caught in a hail of bullets. Despite being grievously wounded, he continued to fight till his last breath, ensuring the success of the operation and the safety of his comrades. His fearless leadership and unwavering determination turned the tide of the encounter but cost him his life in the line of duty. Lt Atul Katarya epitomized the spirit of “Service Before Self.” Always leading from the front, he inspired his men through personal example and unshakeable resolve. His raw courage, infectious enthusiasm, and compassionate nature made him not only a respected leader within his unit but also a beloved figure among the locals. The people of the area affectionately called him “Abdul”, a testament to his humility and the bonds he formed with the community he protected. In recognition of his conspicuous gallantry, indomitable spirit, and supreme sacrifice, Lieutenant Atul Katarya was posthumously awarded the “Sena Medal.” At just 23 years of age, with barely two years of service, Lt Atul Katarya demonstrated extraordinary bravery, maturity, and leadership beyond his years. He laid down his life upholding the highest traditions of the Indian Army, leaving behind an enduring legacy of valour and devotion to duty.
Lt Atul Katarya is survived by his father Col Dhanraj Katarya (Retd), mother Smt Sumitra Katarya and younger brother Shri Amit Katarya.
