Lieutenant Gautam Jain

Lieutenant Gautam Jain hailed from Indore in Madhya Pradesh but was born in Thane (Maharashtra) on 29 May 1979 to Shri Sumat Prakash Jain and Smt Sudha Jain. Growing up, he imbibed strong values of discipline, integrity, and respect—qualities deeply rooted in his family upbringing. From an early age, he displayed exceptional leadership abilities and a sincere sense of responsibility, which shaped his aspiration to serve the nation in uniform. He completed his schooling at Sri Sathya Sai Vidya Vihar, one of the premier educational institutions in Madhya Pradesh, and passed out in 1996. His dedication and determination led him to clear the highly competitive examination for the National Defence Academy (NDA), the prestigious cradle of military leadership in India. He successfully completed his training at the NDA and thereafter proceeded to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, for his pre-commission training.

Upon passing out from IMA in the year 2000, he was commissioned into the 173 Field Regiment of the Regiment of Artillery, one of the most decorated and battle-hardened arms of the Indian Army, often revered as the “Gods of War.” As a young officer, Lt Gautam Jain earned the admiration of his peers and commanding officers for his dedication, clarity of purpose, and unwavering commitment to duty.

Op Rakshak: 01 Nov 2001

In 2001, Lt Gautam Jain was serving with the 173 Field Regiment, under the command of Col M.K. Singh, in Rajouri district, Jammu & Kashmir. The regiment had an impressive operational lineage, having earlier served in North Kashmir from 1995 to 1997, where it played a key role in counter-insurgency operations and held critical positions along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Northern Gullies and Machhal sectors. During this tenure, the unit had successfully destroyed multiple Pakistani bunkers through precise and coordinated artillery fire, inflicting significant losses in response to enemy provocation—further reinforcing the regiment’s reputation as the formidable “Gods of War.” In 2001, the unit was inducted into the Kalakot area of Rajouri to continue its counter-insurgency duties. On 1 November 2001, the unit received credible intelligence about the movement of terrorists in the Dambal Nala area near the village Dahot, close to Kalakot. Acting swiftly, three search parties were launched, led by Lt Gautam Jain, Lt Amit Samanta, and Lt R.K. Jha, respectively.

The cordon-and-search operation progressed through the night, and by the next morning, the troops had reached the suspected hideout. It was Lt Gautam Jain’s team that first made contact with the terrorists. Upon being challenged, the militants—positioned on higher terrain and armed with automatic weapons—opened heavy fire. A fierce gun-battle ensued. Amid an intense exchange of fire, Lt Gautam Jain led from the front, displaying remarkable calm, courage, and clarity of leadership. He continued directing the movement of his troops under sustained enemy fire, ensuring that the cordon remained intact. In the heat of battle, he was struck by multiple bullets and grievously wounded. Naik Bhagwan Singh, who rushed forward to save his officer, was also critically injured. Despite being severely wounded, both continued the fight with exceptional grit and bravery.

However, the injuries proved fatal, and Lt Gautam Jain and Naik Bhagwan Singh made the supreme sacrifice, laying down their lives for the nation in the finest traditions of the Indian Army. In recognition of his exemplary courage, leadership, and devotion to duty, Lt Gautam Jain was posthumously awarded the Badge of Sacrifice and the Certificate of Honour—a tribute to a young officer who served with valour beyond measure. Lt Gautam Jain’s bravery, leadership, and unwavering commitment to his duty remain a shining example of the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
