Gurez Sector Avalanche : 17 Nov 2008
On November 17, 2008, a catastrophic avalanche struck the region, engulfing the area and tragically burying three soldiers from an area domination patrol under tons of snow. The sudden and devastating nature of the avalanche created an urgent and life-threatening situation, calling for immediate action to rescue the trapped soldiers. Upon receiving the distressing news, Lt Amit Beniwal was promptly tasked with the search and rescue operation under the leadership of Major Ajay Upreti. Demonstrating his commitment and readiness, he immediately mobilized the necessary equipment and troops to embark on the rescue mission. Despite the extremely hostile weather conditions and the severe risk to his own safety, Lt Beniwal understood that every second counted in such critical situations. His sense of duty and comradeship drove him to press forward with the rescue efforts, displaying exceptional bravery and selflessness.
As the team proceeded with the rescue operation amidst the treacherous conditions, Lt Beniwal continued to lead by example. However, during this valiant effort, he too became a victim of the avalanche, getting trapped and ultimately buried under the snow. Despite the grave danger, Lt Beniwal's unwavering resolve and leadership shone through as he prioritized the safety and rescue of his fellow soldiers above his own well-being. The brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice alongside Lt Amit Beniwal include Maj Ajay Upreti, Nk Kishore Dung, Nk Bhukan Oroan, Nk Amrit Lal Horo, L/Nk Saiba Baskey, and Sep Chandan Kumar Jha. Lt Amit Beniwal's actions during this tragic event highlighted his cold courage, exceptional comradeship, and leadership of the highest order. He laid down his life in the service of the nation, embodying the noblest traditions of the Indian Army. His sacrifice serves as a poignant reminder of the selfless dedication and bravery that soldiers exhibit, often in the face of insurmountable odds.
Lieutenant Amit Beniwal is survived by his father Shri Krishan Kumar Beniwal and brother Shri Sumit Kumar Beniwal.
