Lieutenant Triveni Singh AC

Lieutenant Triveni Singh was born on 01 February 1978 at Namkum, Ranchi, in present-day Jharkhand. He was the son of an Army veteran, Captain Janmej Singh Thakur, and Smt Pushplata, and grew up in a family deeply rooted in the values of discipline, service, and patriotism. Though born in Ranchi, his ancestral roots lay in Pathankot, Punjab, a region known for its strong military traditions, which further shaped his aspiration to serve the nation in uniform. Lieutenant Triveni Singh completed his schooling at St Joseph Convent School, Pathankot, where he displayed not only academic promise but also exceptional physical prowess. From an early age, he showed a keen interest in sports and martial arts. During his student years, he excelled in martial arts, earning accolades at various national-level competitions, a testament to his physical fitness, mental resilience, and fighting spirit—qualities that would later define his military career. After completing his school education, he moved to Ludhiana for higher studies and graduated from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. Even during his college years, his ambition to join the armed forces remained unwavering. Determined to translate his dream into reality, he successfully cleared the selection process and joined the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. At the academy, he distinguished himself through dedication, leadership qualities, and professional competence. On 08 December 2001, he proudly passed out from the academy and was commissioned into the Indian Army with the rank of Lieutenant.

Lieutenant Triveni Singh was commissioned into the 5th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (5 JAK LI), an elite infantry regiment of the Indian Army renowned for its exceptional gallantry, combat effectiveness, and rich legacy of battle honours. Soon after joining his battalion, he volunteered for and was selected to undergo the demanding Commando Course at the College of Combat. Demonstrating outstanding physical endurance, tactical acumen, and determination, he performed exceedingly well during the course, earning the respect of his instructors and peers alike. In 2003, the battalion was deployed in the Jammu region, an area facing persistent threats from terrorist violence. During this operational tenure, Lieutenant Triveni Singh was entrusted with the important appointment of Adjutant of the unit, a role that required exceptional organisational ability, leadership, and professional maturity—especially for a young officer. He discharged these responsibilities with distinction, earning the confidence of his seniors and the admiration of the troops under his charge. Lieutenant Triveni Singh’s life was marked by professional excellence, physical courage, and an unshakeable commitment to duty. His upbringing in a military household, combined with his personal achievements and rigorous training, prepared him for the ultimate test of leadership and sacrifice—one that he would meet with unparalleled bravery in the service of the nation.

Jammu Terrorist Attack: 02 Jan 2004

On 02 January 2004, at approximately 1850 hours, Lieutenant Triveni Singh was serving with his unit in Jammu when a grave terrorist attack unfolded at Jammu Railway Station. Two heavily armed terrorists stormed into the crowded station premises and began firing indiscriminately at unsuspecting passengers. In this brutal attack, three innocent civilians were killed, and fifteen others sustained serious injuries, creating panic and chaos across the station. Upon receiving information about the attack, Lieutenant Triveni Singh immediately rushed to the site, leading a Quick Reaction Team (QRT) to neutralise the threat and safeguard civilian lives. At around 1925 hours, the team, operating in close coordination with the local police, commenced a systematic search of the railway station premises. Their swift and determined action resulted in a temporary lull in firing, and for some time the terrorists remained untraceable. While Lieutenant Triveni Singh was returning to rejoin his team after the initial search, at about 2020 hours, a terrorist who had been hiding beneath the staircase of the over-bridge suddenly opened fire, grievously injuring a policeman. Without a moment’s hesitation, Lieutenant Triveni Singh charged towards the terrorist, closing in decisively as the militant attempted to escape towards the station’s out gate. Displaying remarkable presence of mind and courage, he engaged the terrorist at close range and eliminated him instantly.

Moments later, a second terrorist, concealed nearby, opened heavy fire and hurled a grenade at Lieutenant Triveni Singh. In the fierce exchange that followed, a bullet struck Lieutenant Triveni Singh on his upper lip, inflicting a fatal wound. Despite being critically injured and bleeding profusely, he refused to withdraw. Summoning extraordinary courage and determination, he advanced towards the terrorist, grappled with him at close quarters, and killed him in hand-to-hand combat. Through his single-handed action, Lieutenant Triveni Singh neutralised both terrorists, decisively ending the attack and saving the lives of countless passengers stranded at the railway station. Soon after, he succumbed to his injuries, attaining martyrdom in the line of duty. Lieutenant Triveni Singh’s actions stand as a shining example of most conspicuous bravery, indomitable courage, and selfless sacrifice. For his extraordinary gallantry, unyielding fighting spirit and selfless act of supreme sacrifice, Lt Triveni Singh was given the nation’s highest peacetime gallantry award “Ashok Chakra”.

Lt Triveni Singh is survived by his father, Capt Janmej Singh Thakur(Retd), mother Smt Pushplata and sisters Smt Pooja & Smt Jyotsana.

Today 2 January ,2021 I feel myself fortunate to remember You in all my esteems. On this day in 2004 You make ‘the contribution that a human being can ever made’ i.e. You made your supreme sacrifice for those whom You even did not know personally but yes… You gave Your life for just being in the relation of “Indian blood” . It is incorrect to say that God has never landed on earth in 21st century because I saw the God , LT. TRIVENI SINGH. But not for much time You stayed on this earth .In fact there would have been a party organized on your arrival in heaven as everyone there was going to get an Hero entering their company. Your ‘Balidan’ is beyond any comparison. Even the words would have been feeling themselves unworthy and mere in front of such a great personality. Though I was not able to meet You in this birth but I am very sure that I will meet You in the very next birth. I promise You to meet You soon…………….JAI HIND
