Battle of Dograi (Indo-Pak War): 21 Sep 1965
During the Indo-Pak War of 1965, the 3 Jat Battalion was entrusted with a crucial mission on 21 September 1965—to capture the heavily defended enemy positions at Dograi village, located across the international border in Pakistan. The strategic importance of Dograi made it a stronghold of the Pakistani forces, manned by a full enemy company supported by tanks, recoilless guns, and fortified pillboxes. The attack on the eastern edge of Dograi was spearheaded by A Company, under the command of Major Asa Ram Tyagi. A determined leader and a man of action, Major Tyagi quickly assessed the tactical situation. Despite the formidable enemy defenses, he resolved to push forward with the leading platoon of his company, setting an example of courage for his men. As the assault commenced, the company faced heavy enemy fire. Major Tyagi was struck by two bullets in his right shoulder, but he refused to retreat or slow down. Instead, he pressed ahead, continuously motivating and directing his soldiers under intense fire. When he noticed that the enemy tanks posed the gravest danger to his troops’ advance, he made a fateful decision.
Displaying extraordinary courage and disregard for personal safety, Major Tyagi personally attacked two enemy tanks armed only with hand grenades. His daring assault succeeded—he neutralized the tank crews and captured both tanks intact, removing a major obstacle from the battalion’s path. This single act not only saved countless lives but also turned the tide of the battle in their favour. However, in the course of this fearless action, Major Tyagi was struck by three more bullets. Gravely wounded, he continued to press forward, leading his men with undiminished resolve, until he finally collapsed unconscious on the battlefield. His selfless leadership and gallantry inspired his troops, who, charged with renewed vigour, launched a ferocious attack and succeeded in capturing the objective. After being evacuated, Major Asa Ram Tyagi succumbed to his severe injuries on 25 September 1965, laying down his life in the line of duty. His fearless leadership, indomitable spirit, and supreme sacrifice became a lasting example of the highest traditions of the Indian Army. In recognition of his extraordinary bravery and leadership of the highest order, Major Asa Ram Tyagi was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra (MVC), India’s second-highest gallantry award. Major Tyagi’s heroism at Dograi continues to be remembered as a shining saga of courage, where one man’s daring act not only inspired his men to victory but also carved his name permanently into the annals of India’s military history.
