Major Bhupender Singh SC

Major Bhupender Singh was born on October 25, 1952, in Mohanpura, a village in the Sri Ganganagar district of Rajasthan. After completing his schooling, he pursued Civil Engineering at MBM Engineering College in Jodhpur, graduating in 1974. His academic excellence and dedication led him to clear the prestigious Combined Defence Services Examination, which paved the way for his selection into the Indian Army. Upon joining the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun, he distinguished himself through exceptional performance, earning the prestigious "Sword of Honour" during the passing-out parade. He was commissioned into the 64th Engineer Regiment of the Corps of Engineers, one of the oldest branches of the Indian Army.

Major Bhupender Singh served in various operational areas across India, including Arunachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Punjab, where he sharpened his military skills and proved his mettle as a dedicated and disciplined officer. His leadership qualities and commitment earned him the respect of both his seniors and juniors. Apart from his professional excellence, he was known for his cheerful disposition and ability to connect with people, making him a beloved figure among his peers. In his personal life, Major Bhupender Singh married Ms. Avinash Kaur, and together they had two daughters, Nimrat Kaur and Rubina Singh. His elder daughter, Nimrat, went on to become an acclaimed actress, gaining recognition for her talent in the entertainment industry.

Throughout his career, Major Bhupender Singh served in various capacities within the Corps of Engineers, which includes Combat Engineers, Military Engineering Service (MES), Border Roads, and also provided officers to organizations like the Military Survey and the Defence Research & Development Organization. After serving in several regions, he was deputed to work with the Border Roads and was posted to Jammu & Kashmir, where he continued to serve with dedication and distinction.

Verinag Operation (J&K) : Jan 1994

In 1994, Major Bhupender Singh was serving with the Border Roads organization in Jammu and Kashmir, where he was the Officer Commanding (OC) of the 99 Road Construction Company, stationed at Verinag near the Jawahar Tunnel. As part of the ongoing "Project Beacon," his unit was assigned the challenging task of constructing five Bailey bridges along the Khannabal-Pahalgam road. To ensure the successful completion of the project, Major Bhupender Singh meticulously planned the operation and decided to conduct a reconnaissance of the bridge sites. In early January 1994, Major Bhupender Singh, accompanied by two officers and 13 soldiers, set out on the recce. Due to the region’s volatile security situation, with active militancy in the area, the recce party was provided armed escorts in line with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). However, as they approached Akkar village, the party was ambushed by militants who had set up a roadblock. From all directions, the militants launched a sudden and fierce attack, using automatic weapons at very close range.

Displaying immense bravery and leadership, Major Bhupender Singh quickly organized his troops and returned fire, directing them to take defensive positions and fight back effectively. After a prolonged and intense exchange of fire, Major Bhupender Singh and his soldiers successfully broke through the ambush and continued their mission. This incident showcased his exemplary courage and tactical acumen in the face of grave danger. However, on January 17, 1994, Major Bhupender Singh was kidnapped by militants belonging to the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen group. They made demands for the release of certain terrorists, which Major Bhupender Singh firmly refused. Consequently, Maj Bhupender Singh was killed by the kidnappers, in retaliation to the denial of their demands on 23 Jan 1994. Major Bhupender Singh’s sacrifice and unwavering commitment to his duty left an indelible mark on the Indian Army. He was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra, one of the highest gallantry awards, for his bravery and dedication to the nation. Ironically, the award was presented on March 13, the birthday of his daughter, Nimrat Kaur, marking a poignant tribute to a soldier who laid down his life for the country while upholding the highest traditions of the Indian Army.

Major Bhupender Singh is survived by his wife Smt Avinash Kaur and daughters Nimrat Kaur and Rubina Singh.

I was studying in school when you were martyred and still remember the guards playing last post in your honor at the Beacon headquarters on that winter morning.

Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it. It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it.

You will be remembered forever as a brave soldier and a fine gentleman man.
