Operation Parakram: 05 March 2006

During 2006, Major P Shyam Sundar was serving with the 38 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), a specialized counter-insurgency force deployed in Jammu and Kashmir. His unit was actively engaged in counter-terrorism operations in the Poonch sector, a region known for frequent infiltration attempts and militant activity. On March 5, 2006, intelligence sources reported the presence of a group of heavily armed terrorists in a dense forest near Bhimber Gali in Poonch district. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the unit quickly devised a strategy to neutralize the threat. A search and destroy operation was planned, with Major Shyam Sundar leading the assault team. Displaying his characteristic decisiveness and courage, Major Shyam Sundar swiftly mobilized his troops and advanced toward the suspected hideout. As they reached the area, the team strategically took up positions to cordon off the terrorists. However, before they could fully tighten the cordon, the militants, well entrenched and desperate to escape, launched a sudden and intense attack.

A fierce gun battle erupted, with heavy exchange of fire from both sides. Major Shyam Sundar and his team fought valiantly, successfully eliminating multiple terrorists. Amidst the chaos, one of his men, Sepoy Rama Rao, sustained severe injuries and collapsed in the open, directly in the line of fire. His condition was critical, and any delay in evacuation could have proved fatal. Without a second thought, Major Shyam Sundar made the selfless and courageous decision to rescue his wounded comrade. Despite being fully aware of the risk, he braved the hail of bullets and sprinted towards Sepoy Rama Rao. As he reached the injured soldier and began pulling him to safety, the enemy unleashed a barrage of gunfire, striking Major Shyam Sundar multiple times. Gravely wounded but undeterred, he continued his effort until he could no longer move. Despite the valiant efforts of his team to save him, Major Shyam Sundar succumbed to his injuries on the battlefield, laying down his life in the highest traditions of the Indian Army. His unparalleled bravery, leadership, and selflessness not only saved the life of his fellow soldier but also left an enduring legacy of heroism. For his extraordinary courage, supreme sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to duty, Major P Shyam Sundar was posthumously awarded the "Sena Medal"

I had the proud privilege of serving alongside Maj. Shyam Sundar ji — a true warrior and a leader by example. We participated in several operations together, where his courage and clarity in the most intense situations inspired everyone around him. I still remember the fierce encounters where, under his command and presence, we successfully neutralized many terrorists. His instincts in the field, his care for his men, and his unshakable commitment to the mission were unmatched. Serving with him was an honor — he wasn’t just a soldier; he was a force of nature.
