From an early age, he displayed qualities of discipline, leadership, and determination, which naturally drew him toward a life of military service. Pursuing his passion, he got selected to join the Indian Army and was commissioned into the 3 Rajput battalion of the Rajput Regiment one of the oldest and most decorated infantry regiments of the Army. As a young officer, he imbibed the regiment’s ethos of courage, camaraderie, and unwavering duty to the nation.

During his service, Major Ahlawat was deployed in Assam as part of counter-insurgency operations aimed at maintaining peace and stability in the region. Counter-insurgency duties in the North-East are among the most challenging assignments for any soldier, demanding exceptional alertness, endurance, and tactical acumen. Assam Operation: 15 Sep 2017

In 2017, as tensions simmered in the North-East, Major Ahlawat’s battalion 3 Rajput was tasked with counter-insurgency operations in Assam, a region where insurgent activity threatened peace and stability. Assam’s dense forests, remote villages, and unpredictable insurgent movements made every mission demanding. Major Ahlawat threw himself wholeheartedly into the task of protecting the country and ensuring stability in the region. He often led patrols deep into difficult terrain, balancing firm action against insurgent threats with efforts to build trust among local communities.

One fateful day, while returning from an operation, tragedy struck. As his convoy navigated a narrow road in a remote part of Assam, a heavy truck lost control on a sharp bend and collided with his vehicle. The impact was severe, and Major Ahlawat sustained grievous injuries. Despite the best efforts of his comrades and medical teams, the accident left him critically hurt. His untimely death was a devastating blow to his regiment and to all who had served alongside him. News of the accident reverberated back to Dehradun, where his family and community mourned the loss of a courageous son. Fellow officers remember him not just as a brave soldier, but as a compassionate leader who cared deeply for his men and carried out his duties with quiet determination.

Major Vijay Singh Ahlawat’s story is not just one of service and sacrifice—it is a reminder that even outside the battlefield, soldiers face risks every day in their commitment to safeguard the nation. His legacy lives on in the proud traditions of the 3 Rajput Regiment and in the memories of those who continue the mission he served so faithfully.

Major Vijay Singh Ahlawat is survived by his wife and a daughter.
