Batalik sector Operation (J&K): 06 Feb 1980

During Feb 1980, Naib Subedar Daulat Singh's unit 5 Raj Rif was deployed in the harsh, mountainous terrain of Ladakh. The AOR(Area of Responsibility) of the unit spanned over remote rugged mountainous terrain with extreme weather conditions, especially in the winter season. The region was notorious for its extreme weather conditions, especially during winter. The soldiers were frequently tasked with patrolling remote areas and clearing snow-blocked roads. The soldiers joining the unit on posting or returning from leave had to acclimatize in phases at transit centers before joining owing to extreme weather conditions. Also, heavy snowfall often blocked the roads and hampered the movement of troops which necessitated frequent clearance operations.

Nb Sub Daulat Singh served with unwavering dedication at Border Check Post Number 8 in the Batalik sector of the Kargil region, situated along the India-Pakistan border. This region, known for its unforgiving terrain and extreme climatic conditions, posed immense challenges for the soldiers stationed there. Freezing temperatures, low oxygen levels, and relentless winds made survival a daily battle for the troops tasked with safeguarding the nation’s borders. On February 6, 1980, while stationed in his bunker amidst these harsh conditions, Nb Sub Daulat Singh succumbed to the extreme environment. The severe cold and oxygen deficiency proved fatal, claiming his life as he stood steadfast in the line of duty. Troops deployed in forward posts like Batalik were tasked with conducting regular patrols to monitor the area between manned positions and maintain vigilance over potential threats. Nb Sub Daulat Singh, a committed and resilient Junior Commissioned Officer, led these patrols with exemplary dedication. His leadership and resolve ensured the safety and security of his sector, despite the constant adversities posed by the challenging environment. At the age of 40, Nb Sub Daulat Singh made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in one of the most demanding and perilous regions in the world.

Nb Sub Daulat Singh is survived by his wife Smt Puran Kanwar, sons Shri Omprakash Singh, Shri Vijay Singh, Hav Ajay Singh (presently serving in Indian Army as a Havildar), and a daughter Smt Vimla kanwar.
