Naik Varsi Vasudeva Rao SC

Naik Varsi Vasudev Rao hailed from the Ganjam district of Odisha, a region known for producing many brave soldiers who have served the nation with distinction. He was the son of Shri Varsi Valram, who instilled in him the values of discipline, integrity, and a deep sense of duty from an early age. Growing up in a modest environment, he completed his initial education in his native place, where he developed a strong desire to serve the nation in uniform. Motivated by this aspiration, he joined the Indian Army at a young age and was recruited into the 6th Battalion of the Madras Regiment—one of the oldest and most decorated infantry regiments of the Indian Army, renowned for its illustrious history, rich battle traditions, and unwavering courage in the face of adversity.

Through sincerity, hard work, and professional competence, he earned the respect of his superiors and comrades alike. His commitment to duty and leadership qualities saw him rise through the ranks, and by 1994, he had been promoted to the rank of Naik. After serving for some time, he entered into matrimony with Ms Savithri, who became a pillar of strength and support in his life.

Manipur Operation: 13 Aug 1994

During 1994, Naik Varsi Vasudev Rao’s unit, 6 Madras, was deployed in Thoubal district of Manipur, one of the most sensitive and volatile regions in the North-East. The area was witnessing heightened insurgent activity, and security forces were continuously engaged in counter-insurgency operations to restore peace and maintain stability under challenging and often hostile conditions. On 13 August 1994, during one such operation, an Army column was tasked to seek out and neutralise Naga militants reported to be operating from a village in the district. The mission demanded a careful and deliberate approach, as the militants were expected to be well-armed and familiar with the terrain. Naik Varsi Vasudev Rao was leading the advance section of the column as it entered the village. As the troops moved closer to a college complex, they suddenly came under intense and accurate fire from militants who had taken up concealed and fortified positions within the area.

Demonstrating quick reflexes and presence of mind, Naik Rao immediately took control of the situation, directing his men to take cover and effectively return fire. During the initial exchange, Naik Rao was struck by a bullet in the chest. Despite sustaining a grievous injury and bleeding heavily, he refused evacuation. Displaying extraordinary courage and leadership, he continued to command his section, issuing clear instructions and motivating his men to press forward with the assault. With complete disregard for his own safety, he remained actively engaged in the firefight, ensuring that the momentum of the operation was maintained. Inspired by his fearless leadership and indomitable spirit, his comrades intensified their attack. The column launched a determined counter-assault on the militant positions, resulting in the elimination of nine militants and the capture of one insurgent. Naik Varsi Vasudev Rao eventually succumbed to his injuries on the battlefield. His supreme sacrifice and resolute leadership in the face of grave danger proved decisive in the success of the operation and left an enduring example for his fellow soldiers. Naik Varsi Vasudev Rao displayed exceptional courage, unwavering determination, and the highest degree of devotion to duty, making the ultimate sacrifice in keeping with the finest traditions of the Indian Army. He was given the nation’s third-highest gallantry award, “Shaurya Chakra”, for his courage, unyielding fighting spirit, and supreme sacrifice.

Naik Varsi Vasudev Rao is survived by his wife, Smt Savithri.
