Nb Sub Krishan Kumar SM

Naib Subedar Krishan Kumar hailed from Mokhra Khas village in Rohtak district of Haryana, a region renowned for its rich tradition of military service and valor. Born on 01 May 1969 to Shri Sultan Singh and Smt Baktawayri Devi, Nb Sub Krishan Kumar grew up in an environment where discipline, hard work, and patriotism were deeply valued. From a young age, he was inspired by the legacy of the Indian Army and nurtured a strong desire to serve the nation in uniform. After completing his school education, he fulfilled this aspiration by joining the Indian Army on 12 December 1986, at just 17 years of age. He was enrolled into the 16 Jat Battalion of the Jat Regiment—one of the Indian Army’s most storied infantry regiments, celebrated for its gallant soldiers and a distinguished history of battlefield exploits. Over the years, through sheer dedication, courage, and perseverance, Nb Sub Krishan Kumar earned the respect of his comrades and superiors alike.

After a few years of service, he married Ms. Sushila Devi, and together they built a loving family. The couple was blessed with two sons, Vivek Malik and Vishal Malik, who became the source of immense pride and joy in his life. By 2008, he had risen to the rank of Naib Subedar, a testament to his professionalism, discipline, and leadership skills. By then, he had served in various challenging operational areas, where he gained invaluable field experience. His steady performance and unwavering commitment to duty had molded him into a battle-hardened soldier and a highly dependable junior commissioned officer, trusted by both his men and commanders to deliver under the most demanding circumstances.

Operation Rakshak (J&K): 03 Jul 2008

In 2008, Naib Subedar Krishan Kumar’s unit, 16 Jat, was deployed in the Kupwara district of Jammu & Kashmir—a region that frequently witnessed militant activity and posed constant operational challenges for the security forces. The area was known to be infested with armed insurgents attempting to infiltrate and disrupt peace, which required the troops to maintain a heightened state of alertness and readiness for combat at all times. Operations were often launched at very short notice, demanding not only exceptional discipline but also courage and quick decision-making from the soldiers on the ground. On 3 July 2008, based on credible intelligence inputs about the presence of a group of hardcore militants in Kupwara, the security forces planned a search-and-destroy operation. As part of this mission, 16 Jat troops were tasked to close in on the suspected location and neutralize the threat. Naib Subedar Krishan Kumar, an experienced and dependable leader, was assigned to lead his team in this high-stakes operation.

Following the plan, Nb Sub Krishan Kumar and his team swiftly moved to the designated area and established their positions. As they approached the suspected hideout, the militants opened fire, triggering a fierce gun battle that raged for several hours. Displaying remarkable composure and tactical acumen under heavy fire, Nb Sub Krishan Kumar led his men with unwavering determination. However, amid the intense exchange of gunfire, Nb Sub Krishan Kumar was critically wounded. Despite his severe injuries, he continued to fight valiantly, ensuring his team’s safety and mission success before finally succumbing to his wounds. At just 39 years of age, he made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation, exemplifying the highest traditions of the Indian Army and the Jat Regiment. For his exceptional bravery, devotion to duty, and supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, Naib Subedar Krishan Kumar was posthumously awarded the prestigious Sena Medal. His heroic actions not only safeguarded his comrades but also struck a decisive blow against insurgent forces in the region.

Naib Subedar Krishan Kumar is survived by his wife, Smt Sushila Devi, and two sons, Shri Vivek Malik and Vishal Malik—the latter proudly following in his father’s footsteps by serving in the Indian Army.
