Rifleman Ganesh Kumar

Rifleman Ganesh Kumar hailed from Ram Kalwan village in Pathankot district, Punjab. He was born on 30 April 1976 to Shri Dharam Pal and Smt Parkasho Devi. He grew up in a close-knit family alongside his three brothers—Ramesh Kumar, Suresh Kumar, and Sohan—and three sisters, Sudesh Kumari, Bishno Devi, and Anju Bala. His upbringing in a humble rural environment instilled in him strong values of discipline, responsibility, and a deep sense of patriotism. After completing his school education, he chose to serve the nation by joining the Indian Army. He was recruited into 9 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (9 JAK Rif), a battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles Regiment, renowned for its rich legacy, gallantry, and distinguished role in numerous operations.

Following his initial years of service with his parent unit, where he honed his military skills and gained valuable operational experience, he was deputed to serve with 3 Rashtriya Rifles (3 RR). The Rashtriya Rifles units are specifically tasked with counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir, often operating in challenging and high-risk environments. During his tenure with 3 RR, Rfn Ganesh Kumar was actively involved in counter-insurgency duties, demonstrating commitment and dedication while serving in one of the most sensitive operational areas of the country.

Anantnag Operation: 01 March 2001

In March 2001, Rifleman Ganesh Kumar was serving with 3 Rashtriya Rifles, deployed in the militancy-affected Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. At the time, the region was among the most volatile areas in the Kashmir Valley, frequently witnessing terrorist activities such as ambushes, targeted attacks, and infiltration attempts. The challenging operational environment demanded constant vigilance, rapid response, and exceptional courage from the troops. Operating under the mandate of 'Operation Rakshak', the unit was actively engaged in counter-insurgency duties aimed at neutralizing terrorist threats and safeguarding the local population. Their tasks included area domination patrols, search-and-cordon operations, and securing key routes and vulnerable locations. Given the persistent threat of sudden attacks, all troop movements were carefully planned and executed, often in well-protected convoys, with soldiers maintaining a high level of alertness at all times.

On 1 March 2001, during an operational movement in Janglat Mandi village in Anantnag district, the unit’s troops came under a hostile threat during an encounter with terrorists. At that time, Brigadier Vikramjit Singh was also moving in the same convoy as the troops. In this critical situation, Rifleman Ganesh Kumar displayed exceptional courage and presence of mind. Fully aware of the grave danger, he acted swiftly and decisively to protect the senior officer. In a remarkable act of selflessness and devotion to duty, he shielded Brigadier Vikramjit Singh, ensuring his safety while exposing himself to imminent threat. In the course of this gallant action, Rifleman Ganesh Kumar sustained fatal injuries and made the supreme sacrifice. His bravery not only saved the life of a senior officer but also upheld the highest traditions of the Indian Army, exemplifying duty, honour, and selfless service. Rifleman Ganesh Kumar was a courageous and committed soldier who laid down his life in the line of duty at the young age of 25 years.

Rfn Ganesh Kumar is survived by his brothers Shri Ramesh Kumar, Shri Suresh Kumar, and Naik Sohan Lal (who too served in the same 9 JAK Rifles)—and three sisters, Smt Sudesh Kumari, Smt Bishno Devi, and Smt Anju Bala.
