Rifleman Netrabhan Singh SC

Rifleman Netrabhan Singh hailed from Gadrata village in Khetri tehsil of Jhunjhunun district in Rajasthan, a region known for its deep-rooted martial traditions and generations of soldiers who have served the nation with distinction. He was born into a proud military family, where the spirit of service and sacrifice was not merely spoken of, but lived every day. His father, Shri Hari Kishan Singh, was an Army veteran who had served with the Sawai Man Singh Guards during the Second World War, while his grandfather, Shri Bhoor Singh, had earlier rendered distinguished service in the same regiment during the First World War. Growing up amidst stories of courage, discipline, and battlefield camaraderie, young Netrabhan Singh was deeply inspired by the exemplary lives of his father and grandfather.

From an early age, Rifleman Netrabhan Singh nurtured the ambition of wearing the olive-green uniform and serving the nation. After completing his school education, he fulfilled this aspiration by joining the Indian Army. He was recruited into the 11th Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles, one of the oldest and most decorated infantry regiments of the Indian Army. The Rajputana Rifles is renowned for its indomitable fighting spirit, gallantry in battle, and a glorious legacy earned across numerous campaigns and wars. As a soldier of 11 Raj Rif, Rifleman Netrabhan Singh upheld the finest traditions of his regiment and the rich military heritage of his family.

Pulwama Operation: 22 Oct 1992

During October 1992, Rifleman Netrabhan Singh’s unit, the 11th Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles, was deployed in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir and was engaged in sustained counter-terrorism operations. The battalion’s Area of Responsibility (AOR) was highly volatile and prone to frequent militant activity, demanding a constant state of high alert from all ranks. The region was also vulnerable to infiltration, making regular armed patrols and search operations essential to prevent terrorists from establishing a foothold. On 22 October 1992, the unit received specific intelligence regarding the presence of heavily armed terrorists in Muran village, located within its AOR. Recognising the urgency of the situation, a decision was taken to immediately launch a search-and-cordon operation to apprehend or eliminate the militants before they could escape or cause harm to civilians and security forces. Rifleman Netrabhan Singh was detailed as a member of the team tasked with carrying out this high-risk operation.

As planned, Rifleman Netrabhan Singh and his comrades moved swiftly to the suspected area and established a cordon around the village before commencing a systematic search. While the operation was underway, the terrorists, realising they were surrounded, opened indiscriminate fire and hurled grenades in a desperate attempt to break through the cordon and flee. The sudden and intense exchange of fire posed a grave threat to the troops involved in the operation. Displaying exceptional presence of mind and extraordinary courage, Rifleman Netrabhan Singh immediately sprang into action. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, he swiftly repositioned himself to a vantage point and retaliated with accurate and effective fire. His decisive action successfully blocked the escape route of the terrorists, thwarting their attempt to break free. Despite coming under heavy enemy fire, he continued to engage the militants with determination. Demonstrating indomitable bravery, Rifleman Netrabhan Singh then advanced towards the terrorists, closing in on their position. In a fierce encounter at close quarters, he eliminated four terrorists, dealing a severe blow to the militant group. During this daring assault, he sustained critical injuries. However, undeterred by his wounds and bleeding profusely, he continued to charge towards the remaining terrorist who was firing effectively at the troops. Even in his gravely injured state, he kept firing and pursuing the militant, ensuring the safety of his comrades and preventing further casualties.

Rifleman Netrabhan Singh ultimately succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom, having ensured the success of the operation and the security of his fellow soldiers. The operation resulted in the recovery of an AK-56 rifle along with a large quantity of ammunition and explosives from the slain terrorists. Rifleman Netrabhan Singh proved himself to be a valiant and selfless soldier, whose courage, devotion to duty, and unwavering camaraderie exemplified the finest traditions of the Indian Army. In recognition of his exceptional gallantry and supreme sacrifice in the face of grave danger, he was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra on 26 January 1993.

Rfn Netrabhan Singh is survived by his mother, Smt Chand Kanwar.
