राइफलमैन संजीब गुरुंग नेपाल के प्रबत के गाँव थापा नेपाने मे श्री
मन बहादुर गुरुंग के परिवार मे हुआ था ।
12 सितंबर 1987 को, राइफलमैन संजीव गुरुंग अपनी पलटन के एक सदस्य के रूप में, सियाचिन ग्लेशियर के बिलाफोंडला परिसर की एक महत्वपूर्ण चौकी पर तैनात थे। 23 सितंबर 1987 की रात को, दुश्मन ने इस चौकी पर एक निर्णायक हमला किया, जिसके पहले भारी तोपखाने और मोर्टार से गोलाबारी की गई। राइफलमैन गुरुंग और उनके साथियों ने डटकर मुकाबला किया और दुश्मन के हमले को नाकाम कर दिया।
पुनः, 24 सितंबर 1987 की रात को दुश्मन ने फिर से चौकी पर हमला किया। राइफलमैन गुरुंग और उनके साथियों ने डटकर मुकाबला किया और दुश्मन के हमले को पीछे धकेल दिया। लगभग 0215 बजे दुश्मन ने इस चौकी पर एक और हमला किया। एक समय पर हुए भीषण युद्ध में राइफलमैन गुरुंग का गोला-बारूद समाप्त हो गया। जब वह अपनी मैगज़ीन भरने में व्यस्त थे, उन्होंने दो दुश्मन सैनिकों को देखा, जो चढ़ने में कामयाब हो गए थे, उनकी ओर बढ़ रहे थे। शांत रहते हुए, राइफलमैन गुरुंग ने अपने बगल में पड़ा एक खाली जरीकेन उठाया और उसे आगे बढ़ रहे दुश्मन सैनिकों पर फेंक दिया। जैसे ही ये सैनिक आगे बढ़ने में लड़खड़ाने लगे, उन्होंने अपनी खाली राइफल से उन पर हमला किया और अपनी राइफल के बट से एक को मारने में सफल रहे। मुठभेड़ के दौरान दुश्मन के दूसरे सैनिक ने उनकी पीठ में गोली मार दी
राइफलमैन संजीव गुरुंग ने उल्लेखनीय साहस और वीरता का परिचय दिया तथा भारतीय सेना की सर्वोच्च परंपराओं के अनुरूप अपने प्राणों की आहुति दी।
