Operation Pawan – August 13, 1988

By the mid-1980s, Sri Lanka was embroiled in a violent civil conflict between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a separatist militant organization fighting for an independent Tamil state. To bring stability to the region and enforce the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord of 1987, the Indian Peacekeeping Force (IPKF) was deployed in Sri Lanka as part of Operation Pawan. This mission aimed to oversee the disarmament of LTTE militants, facilitate peace, and protect civilian lives. However, the operation quickly escalated into a full-scale military conflict, as the LTTE refused to disarm and launched aggressive attacks against the IPKF. The Indian Army found itself engaged in intense counter-insurgency warfare in unfamiliar and hostile terrain, where the enemy had the advantage of deep local knowledge, well-entrenched positions, and guerrilla tactics. The IPKF had to operate in extremely challenging conditions, facing ambushes, booby traps, landmines, and surprise attacks from an elusive and well-trained adversary.  In August 1988, Sepoy Babu Lal Gurjar was serving with the 12 Jat Battalion, which was deployed in Sri Lanka as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF). The battalion was actively engaged in counter-insurgency operations against the LTTE, conducting regular missions to restore stability in the region.

On August 13, 1988, Sepoy Babu Lal Gurjar was on duty in Kanakaryan Kulam, a strategically significant region in northern Sri Lanka that had witnessed frequent clashes between the Indian forces and LTTE militants. While carrying out his peacekeeping duties, his unit came under sudden and heavy attack from LTTE fighters. The militants, using their well-coordinated guerrilla tactics, opened fire on Indian soldiers, attempting to inflict maximum casualties. Amidst the chaos of battle, Sepoy Babu Lal Gurjar found himself in the direct line of fire. Demonstrating exceptional bravery, he retaliated with his comrades, holding his position despite being heavily outnumbered. In the ensuing gunfight, he was struck by enemy bullets but continued to resist. Moments later, a landmine explosion rocked the area, further intensifying the attack. The explosion inflicted severe injuries, making the situation even more dire.

Despite his grievous wounds, Sepoy Babu Lal Gurjar refused to retreat, continuing to fight with unwavering determination. His actions reflected the indomitable spirit and courage of the Indian Army—where duty, honour, and sacrifice stand above all else. Unfortunately, the injuries proved fatal, and he succumbed to his wounds, making the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty at the age of 22 years. Following his martyrdom, Sepoy Babu Lal Gurjar was given full military honours, and his last rites were performed in Sri Lanka on the same day, August 13, 1988. His name is remembered with pride and reverence, not just by his regiment but also by the people of his village and the entire state of Rajasthan. His sacrifice during 'Operation Pawan' underscores the extraordinary bravery and resilience of the Indian Army, which continues to safeguard national interests with unwavering dedication.
