During December 2017, Sepoy Jagsir Singh was serving with the 18th Battalion of the Punjab Regiment, which was deployed in the highly sensitive Nowshera sector along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. This sector has long been regarded as one of the most volatile stretches of the LoC due to its strategic importance and the persistent threat posed by the enemy. Frequent ceasefire violations and unprovoked firing from across the border were a harsh reality of daily operations, demanding constant vigilance, preparedness, and resilience from the troops manning the forward posts. The battalion was entrusted with the critical responsibility of holding and defending forward positions, often under adverse terrain and weather conditions. Soldiers remained on round-the-clock alert, ready to respond instantly to any hostile action. In such an operational environment, discipline, alertness, and courage were indispensable, and Sepoy Jagsir Singh consistently upheld these qualities while carrying out his duties. On the night of 31 December 2017, Sepoy Jagsir Singh was deployed at a forward post located at Rumli Dhara in the Nowshera sector. In the early hours of the morning, at approximately 3:50 AM, Pakistani Army troops of the Baloch Regiment initiated unprovoked sniper fire targeting Indian positions along the Line of Control. The sudden attack shattered the quiet of the night, and the situation quickly escalated into a fierce exchange of fire. The Indian Army responded promptly and decisively, engaging the enemy in a determined and effective manner to safeguard its posts and personnel.
Amidst this intense firefight, Sepoy Jagsir Singh was grievously wounded by enemy fire. Despite the severity of his injuries, he displayed remarkable courage and composure, embodying the finest traditions of the Punjab Regiment. He was immediately evacuated from the forward post and rushed to the nearest military hospital for urgent medical treatment. Tragically, despite swift evacuation and best possible efforts to save his life, Sepoy Jagsir Singh succumbed to his injuries on the way and attained martyrdom in the line of duty. Sepoy Jagsir Singh was known among his comrades as a disciplined, sincere, and highly committed soldier who never hesitated to shoulder responsibility, even in the most demanding and dangerous circumstances. His supreme sacrifice reflects his exceptional bravery, steadfast sense of duty, and unwavering devotion to the nation.
Sepoy Jagsir Singh is survived by his wife, Smt. Mohinderpal Kaur, his daughters Ms Nagam and Ms Gurneet, and his son Shri Jagdish.
