Uri Sector Operation : 01 Jun 2018

During the period from June 2018 to May 2023, 62 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) Battalion, where Sepoy Raman Kumar was serving on deputation, was deployed in the Baramulla district of Jammu & Kashmir, a region highly sensitive due to persistent militant activity and frequent infiltration attempts along the Line of Control (LoC). The battalion was actively involved in counter-insurgency and area domination operations, as its Area of Responsibility (AOR) remained volatile and militancy-prone. The challenging operational environment demanded constant vigilance, with troops maintaining a high level of alertness at all times. In addition to anti-terror operations, the region was particularly vulnerable to infiltration from across the border, making regular armed patrols, surveillance, and search operations essential to safeguard the area and prevent any hostile movement. The difficult terrain, harsh weather conditions, and ever-present threat of militant activity made every mission both physically demanding and operationally critical. In this challenging backdrop, intelligence inputs indicated suspicious movement in the Maidan area of Uri, located near the LoC in Baramulla district. Acting swiftly on this information, 62 RR Battalion launched a search operation under the leadership of Major Amit Kumar. Sepoy Raman Kumar was part of the selected team entrusted with this critical mission, reflecting the confidence reposed in his courage, discipline, and operational capabilities.

On 1st June 2018, Major Amit Kumar and his team moved towards the suspected location to conduct the search operation. The route to the target area passed through a dense forest and extremely rugged mountainous terrain. The area was remote, treacherous, and marked by steep rocky slopes, narrow pathways, and deep gorges, making movement highly hazardous even under normal conditions. As the troops carefully advanced through this dangerous terrain in the Maidan area of Uri, tragedy struck when Major Amit Kumar and Sepoy Raman Kumar accidentally slipped and fell from a steep mountain slope into a deep gorge. The fall from a considerable height caused severe injuries to both soldiers. A rescue operation was launched immediately by fellow troops despite the difficult terrain. Both injured soldiers were evacuated and rushed to the nearby military hospital at Rampur for urgent medical treatment. Despite all efforts to save him, Sepoy Raman Kumar later succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom in the line of duty. Sepoy Raman Kumar was a brave, fearless, and dedicated soldier who served the nation with unwavering courage and commitment. At the young age of 23, he made the supreme sacrifice while performing his duty in one of the most challenging operational environments of the country. His devotion, sacrifice, and patriotism remain a lasting inspiration and a proud legacy of service to the nation.
