Subedar Kelash Singh

Subedar Kelash Singh, a valiant soldier of the Indian Army, hailed from Bhondsi village in Gurgaon district, Haryana. Born on 02 October 1956, he was the son of Shri Pahlad Singh and grew up in his hometown, where he completed his schooling. From a young age, Sub Kelash Singh aspired to serve in the Armed Forces, driven by a deep sense of patriotism and a desire to contribute to the nation’s security. He turned his dream into reality by joining the Indian Army on 29 October 1974, at the young age of 18. He was recruited into the Regiment of Artillery, one of the most vital combat support arms of the Army, renowned for its powerful field guns and its motto, "Sarvatra Izzat-o-Iqbal" (Everywhere with Honour and Glory). As the second-largest arm of the Army, the Regiment of Artillery plays a pivotal role in both offensive and defensive operations, utilizing an array of advanced weapons, including guns, mortars, and rocket launchers. Sub Kelash Singh quickly adapted to the rigours of military life and mastered various weapon systems in his regiment, earning a reputation as a skilled and competent soldier.

A few years into his service, Sub Kelash Singh married Ms. Jainti Devi, with whom he built a loving family, blessed with two daughters and a son. Despite the demands of military service, he balanced his duties as a family man with his responsibilities as a soldier. Known for his unwavering dedication and discipline, he earned the respect and admiration of his juniors and peers alike. By 2001, after nearly three decades of exemplary service, Sub Kelash Singh had risen to the rank of Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO). Throughout his career, he served in numerous operational areas, often under challenging and demanding conditions, which shaped him into a battle-hardened and resilient soldier.

IED Blast: 18 Jan 2001

In 2001, Subedar Kelash Singh was serving with the 81 Field Regiment, which was deployed in Jammu & Kashmir as part of "Operation Rakshak," a counter-insurgency operation aimed at maintaining peace and security in the region. Known for his unwavering dedication and commitment, Sub Kelash Singh took on every operational task with diligence and courage. On the fateful day of 18 January 2001, Sub Kelash Singh was assigned an important operational task that required him to travel to Jammu by road. Accompanied by fellow soldiers, he set out on the journey early in the morning. However, at around 0930 hours, while traveling on the Srinagar-Jammu highway, the vehicle he was in became the target of a militant attack. The militants, employing an improvised explosive device (IED), detonated the device between Khanabal and Awantipur, approximately 40 kilometers from Srinagar.

The IED blast was devastating, causing severe damage to the vehicle and inflicting grievous injuries on Sub Kelash Singh and several other soldiers. The injured soldiers were rushed to the 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar for medical treatment. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, Sub Kelash Singh succumbed to his injuries, making the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. Subedar Kelash Singh’s untimely martyrdom was a profound loss for his family, regiment, and the nation. As a valiant soldier and a committed junior commissioned officer, he embodied the highest ideals of duty, courage, and selflessness. His sacrifice stands as a testament to the relentless dedication and bravery of the Indian Army in safeguarding the sovereignty and security of the country.

Sub Kelash Singh is survived by his wife Smt Jainti Devi, daughters Smt Sheetal Singh and Smt Pratibha Singh and son Shri Satender Singh.
