Gunner Shyam Singh Yadav

Gunner Shyam Singh Yadav born in 1943 in Garhiya village, Bewar tehsil, Mainpuri district, Uttar Pradesh. He was the youngest of three brothers born to Shri Fateh Singh in a humble family that valued hard work, discipline, and patriotism. From an early age, he was inspired by the ideals of military service and nurtured a deep desire to wear the uniform of the Indian Army. Determined to turn his aspiration into reality, he diligently pursued his education while preparing himself for a career in the Armed Forces.At the age of 19, his dream came true when he was selected during an Army recruitment rally on 13 December 1963. Joining the Indian Army marked the beginning of a life dedicated to the service of the nation. He was enrolled into the 219 Field Regiment of the Regiment of Artillery, one of the Indian Army's most distinguished combat support arms, known for its precision, professionalism, and decisive firepower on the battlefield.

The Regiment of Artillery plays a crucial role in military operations by providing accurate and effective fire support to infantry, armoured, and mechanized formations. Over the years, it has evolved into a highly specialized force comprising Medium, Light, Missile, Rocket, and Surveillance & Target Acquisition (SATA) Regiments, each equipped with advanced weapon systems and modern technology to meet diverse operational requirements. Becoming a part of this prestigious arm was a matter of immense pride for Gunner Shyam Singh, who embraced his responsibilities with dedication, courage, and an unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation.

Military Career

During his 17 years of service, he served the nation with complete honesty, integrity, and dedication, earning an 'Exemplary' character certificate upon his retirement in 1981. His service was recognized with several medals and honors, including the Paschimi Star, Samar Seva Star 1965, Raksha Medal 1965, Sangram Medal, Sainya Seva Medal (J&K), 9 Years Long Service Medal, and the 25th Independence Anniversary Medal. Even after retiring from the army, his spirit of service remained undiminished. He resumed work as a government bus driver, continuing to serve society with the same sincerity and discipline. Known for his honesty and helpful nature, he earned the respect and admiration of all who knew him. Around the year 2000, after retiring from his second career, he devoted his entire life to helping others. He was a man of immense generosity and compassion. He never refused anyone who came to him for help. Often, he would save half of his pension to assist those in need—sometimes helping a friend in distress, and at other times supporting someone in purchasing land or overcoming financial hardship. He paid little attention to his own comforts or even those of his family, always placing the needs of others before his own.

Despite his selflessness, his love for his family was deep and unwavering. He was a man of truth and principles. Even when advised to tell a small lie for convenience, he never compromised his integrity. He lived a life free from harming others and even extended kindness to those who had once troubled him in his childhood. Much of this account of his life was shared by his wife, who witnessed his journey firsthand. Gunner Shyam Singh Yadav passed away on 25 November 2007 due to illness, leaving behind a legacy of courage, honesty, and selfless service.
