Sepoy Chaudhri Ram

Sepoy Chaudhri Ram hailed from Dharamshala in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, a region renowned for its proud martial tradition and generations of brave men who answered the nation's call to serve. Born into the family of Shri Lala Ram, he was raised with the values of honesty, discipline, hard work, and an unwavering sense of duty towards society. Like many young men from the hills of Kangra, Sep Chaudhri Ram grew up listening to inspiring stories of soldiers who had defended the nation with courage and sacrifice. Those stories nurtured in him a lifelong dream of wearing the olive-green uniform and dedicating his life to the service of India. Determined to turn that dream into reality, he completed his initial education and, on 09 August 1948, enlisted in the Indian Army, embarking on a journey that reflected his patriotism and commitment to the nation. Sepoy Chaudhri Ram was inducted into the 14th Battalion of the Dogra Regiment, a battalion raised in 1948 during one of the most critical phases of independent India's military history. As a young soldier, he underwent demanding military training that transformed him into a disciplined infantryman capable of meeting the challenges of active service. As part of the illustrious Dogra Regiment—renowned for its courage, discipline, and unwavering devotion to duty—he became a member of a battalion that was immediately entrusted with the responsibility of defending the nation's fragile frontiers in Jammu and Kashmir.

While fulfilling his responsibilities as a soldier, Sep Chaudhri Ram also embraced family life. After serving for a couple of years, he married Ms Krishna Devi, who became his life partner and a steadfast source of support during his years in uniform. Together, they shared the hopes and sacrifices that are inseparable from the life of a soldier's family, standing united as he continued to serve the nation with honour and unwavering dedication. Before donning the uniform of the Indian Army, Sepoy Chaudhri Ram had already demonstrated his unwavering commitment to India's freedom by serving in the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army) under the inspiring leadership of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Like thousands of patriots who responded to Netaji's historic call, he dedicated himself to the struggle for an independent India, embracing the ideals of courage, discipline, and selfless service. The values he imbibed during his time in the INA became the guiding principles of his life and continued to shape his journey as a soldier long after India attained Independence.

Indo-Pak Border Operation- 11th September 1949

Sepoy Chaudhri Ram joined his unit, 14 Dogra, when the 1947–48 India–Pakistan War was still shaping the future of Jammu and Kashmir. Following Pakistan-backed tribal invasions and the subsequent induction of regular Pakistani forces, the Indian Army launched a series of determined operations to secure vital communication routes and reclaim occupied territory. In this campaign, 14 Dogra was deployed in the strategically important Jhangar–Naushera–Rajauri sector, an area that witnessed some of the fiercest fighting of the conflict. The battalion became part of the operations that strengthened the Naushera–Jhangar line, supported the recapture of Jhangar, and contributed to the advance towards Rajauri, helping restore Indian control over key positions in the region. As a young soldier of 14 Dogra, Sepoy Chaudhri Ram served alongside his comrades in these demanding operational deployments, carrying forward the same spirit of patriotism that had earlier inspired him to serve under Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. His duty demanded constant vigilance, endurance, and readiness in a region where hostile action remained a persistent reality.

Although a United Nations-mediated ceasefire came into effect on 1 January 1949, bringing the formal hostilities of the 1947–48 war to an end, peace did not immediately return to the border. Ceasefire violations, infiltration attempts, and operational deployments continued along the newly established ceasefire line, requiring Indian troops to remain on active military duty in challenging terrain. During one such operational deployment in September 1949, Sepoy Chaudhri Ram came under enemy fire and sustained gunshot wounds while performing his duty. True to the soldier's oath of placing the nation above self, he stood steadfast in the face of danger. Despite every effort to save him, he succumbed to his injuries on 11 September 1949, making the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation. His sacrifice stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of 14 Dogra, whose soldiers continued to guard India's frontiers with courage and determination even after the guns of war had officially fallen silent.

Sepoy Chaudhri Ram is survived by his grandson, Shri Sourav Thakur.
