Wg Cdr Rajpal Singh Dhaliwal VM

Wing Commander Rajpal Singh Dhaliwal hailed from Punjab and was born on 6 January 1974. From an early age, he nurtured a deep aspiration to serve the nation in uniform. Inspired by the ideals of patriotism and military service, he worked diligently towards his goal and, after completing his school education, earned selection to the prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA). During his training at the NDA, he distinguished himself through his dedication, discipline, and all-round performance, eventually being selected for the flying branch of the Indian Air Force. Following his successful completion of training at the NDA, he proceeded to the Air Force Academy, Dundigal near Hyderabad, where he underwent advanced flying training. He was commissioned into the Indian Air Force as a Pilot Officer on 17 June 1995 as a member of the 155th Pilots' Course. After being inducted into the fighter stream of the IAF, he underwent rigorous multi-stage flying training to qualify as a fighter pilot. On completion of his operational conversion, he was posted to a frontline fighter squadron and went on to serve at several important Air Force bases across the country. Throughout his early years of service, he earned a reputation as a highly skilled, disciplined, and dependable fighter pilot, displaying exceptional professionalism and an unwavering commitment to flying excellence.

While serving with No. 17 Squadron as a Flying Officer, he was called upon to participate in Operation 'Safed Sagar', the Indian Air Force's air campaign during the Kargil War of 1999. Despite being one of the youngest fighter pilots in the IAF at the time, he was entrusted with the responsibility of undertaking highly challenging night strike missions against enemy positions in the rugged mountains of Kargil. During July 1999, he successfully flew four operational combat missions under extremely demanding conditions, navigating the treacherous Himalayan terrain in darkness and accurately delivering his weapons on designated enemy targets. His courage, exceptional flying skills, precision under pressure, and unwavering devotion to duty made a significant contribution to the success of the air operations during the conflict. In recognition of his outstanding gallantry, determination, and exemplary professional competence displayed during Operation 'Safed Sagar', he was awarded the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry), one of the Indian Air Force's distinguished decorations for acts of courage and devotion to duty.

After the Kargil War, he continued to serve the Indian Air Force with distinction, undertaking a variety of operational, instructional, and staff assignments. During this period, he married Ms Rubina, and the couple was blessed with a daughter, Rasha. Balancing the responsibilities of military service with those of a devoted husband and father, he remained deeply committed to both his family and his profession. By 2009, with nearly 14 years of distinguished service, Wing Commander Rajpal Singh Dhaliwal had matured into an exceptionally competent and experienced fighter pilot. His extensive operational experience, outstanding flying skills, and thorough understanding of diverse air operations had earned him the respect and admiration of both his superiors and fellow air warriors, making him one of the Indian Air Force's accomplished combat aviators.

Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT) Mission: 21 Jan 2009

By 2009, Wg Cdr Rajpal Singh Dhaliwal was serving with the prestigious Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT), the Indian Air Force's premier aerobatic display team. Raised in 1996 as part of No. 52 Squadron, the Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team served as the aerial ambassadors of the Indian Air Force, showcasing its professionalism, precision, and flying excellence through breathtaking aerobatic displays across India and abroad. Wg Cdr Dhaliwal joined this elite team on 1 July 2007 and soon became an integral part of its demanding operational and display commitments. Selection to the Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team was regarded as one of the highest professional honours for a fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force. The team comprised only the most experienced and exceptionally skilled aviators, all of whom were Qualified Flying Instructors (QFIs) with extensive operational flying experience. Chosen through a rigorous selection process, these pilots were entrusted with executing complex formation aerobatics that demanded absolute precision, flawless coordination, split-second timing, and complete mutual trust. The role required exceptional flying skills, immense mental concentration, and the ability to operate at the very limits of both man and machine. Owing to its extraordinary standards of professionalism and the admiration it commanded within the Air Force and among the public, serving with SKAT was considered one of the most coveted appointments for a fighter pilot. Wg Cdr Rajpal Singh Dhaliwal, an accomplished combat aviator with extensive experience on fighter aircraft, was among the select few who earned the privilege of joining this elite formation. Along with his fellow team members, he underwent an intensive training schedule to perfect the highly demanding and often perilous aerobatic manoeuvres that had become the hallmark of the Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team.

On 21 January 2009, the team was carrying out a routine training sortie from the Air Force Station, Bidar in Karnataka, in preparation for forthcoming aerobatic displays. At approximately 8:30 a.m., Wg Cdr Rajpal Singh Dhaliwal took off in his Kiran Mk-II aircraft as part of a nine-aircraft formation. During the practice, the team was executing one of its signature manoeuvres known as the 'Barbed Wire Cross', a highly complex display in which aircraft crossed each other's flight paths at low altitude with split-second precision before breaking away in different directions. While performing this manoeuvre, Wing Commander Dhaliwal's aircraft suddenly developed a critical technical malfunction. Flying at an altitude of barely 100 feet above the ground, there was virtually no time or height available to recover the aircraft or eject safely. Within moments, the aircraft crashed and burst into flames, with wreckage scattering over an area of nearly two kilometres. Wg Cdr Rajpal Singh Dhaliwal made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty while participating in a mission that exemplified the professionalism and operational excellence of the Indian Air Force. Wg Cdr Rajpal Singh Dhaliwal was an outstanding fighter pilot, a decorated war veteran, and a dedicated air warrior whose career reflected exceptional courage, professional competence, and unwavering devotion to duty. Having distinguished himself during the Kargil War and later earned a place in the Indian Air Force's most prestigious aerobatic team, he remained committed to serving the nation until his last breath.

Wg Cdr Rajpal Singh Dhaliwal is survived by his wife Smt Rubina and daughter Ms Rasha.

We lost A Kargil Hero, who led for successful operation in kargil but we have lost him in exercise due to low quality aircraft. We should be ashamed of ourselves.
