2nd Lt. Vishnu Athalye IC 12635, aged 21 yrs. killed in action during the battle of Walong on 16th November 1962 in the then NEFA front. He was Gun Position Officer. VN Athalye was airdropped on the battlefield of Walong. He was in ‘E’ TP 52 Bty BDE 17 Parachute Field Regiment 8 Rajput. Ordered by Lieutenant Colonel Arjinder Singh alongwith Captain Bhatnagar & Lt. Chawla & 39 Gunners. It was then concluded that all of them were missing and declared officially killed in ambush by heavy numer of the Chinese army. Before he laid down while not only to defend his motherland but VN Athalye attacked the Chinese army with his 25 pounder artillery guns firing and destroyed number of enemy bunkers and a great numbers of the Chinese casualties till the last bullet and his last breath. Vishnu Athalye fought with unbelievable strong willpower, determination and valour in the fierce battle of Walong, described by Colonel Bhimwal, the 1962 Sino-Indian War veteran who fought together with 2nd Lt. Vishnu Athalye in Walong sector. Though the Chinese pushed back away the Indian Infantry from Kibuthu towards Walong, they couldn’t go ahead due to deadly fighting spirit and utmost courage proved by VN Athalye and his 39 Warriors. Recently, I have written a book upon VN Athalye the forgotten Hero of the Battle of Walong.
