Military Career : 1969-2001

As a young officer, he took part in 1971 Indo-Pak war , when his unit 974 Air defence workshop was deployed in Srinagar during the operations. As a young Captain, he served in the prestigious appointment of Adjutant, EME School – Baroda and subsequently as an instructor at OTS Madras (now OTA).

Brig Contractor (then Col) commanded the 639 EME Battalion at Yol between 1991-93 before moving on to an instructional appointment as Head of Department of Tactics and Management at the Military College of EME (MCEME).  He was then posted as Deputy Military Attache at the Embassy of India, Moscow between 1995-98, where he was responsible for the identification and evaluation of next generation armoured fighting vehicles for the Indian Army as well as for ensuring critical and effective engineering support to the complete range of vehicles, armaments, missiles and air defence equipment of Russian origin used by the Indian Army.

Brig Osman served in Army HQs and held various appointments including Joint Director in Master General Ordnance Branch (1985-89) and Deputy Director General Equipment Management (DDGEM) between 2000 and 2001. He also served as the Commandant of the vital 505 Army Base Workshop based in New Delhi between 1998 and 2000.

Brig Osman was a committed soldier with professional skills of a very high order. A die hard soldier at heart, he was a good human being too, who commanded respect of his seniors as well as of those, who served under him. He left for his heavenly abode on 23 Mar 2001, but will always be remembered as an outstanding soldier , who served the nation till his last breath.

Brigadier Osman Contractor is survived by his wife, Mrs Yasmin Contractor, son, Danish and daughter, Seher.

I met Osman in the Engg. College where we were class fellows — way back in ’62. Soon we became room mates and bosom friends. We were so friendly and together always our colleagues used to call us “brothers”.
When he was selected in the army — S.S.B. Bangalore, instead of returning back to his town, he traveled to the town I was staying at that time — just to share the good news with me in person, and then proceeded to his place . Such was his affection.
Over the years, we kept in touch constantly. We could meet off and on as I had to travel extensively in my job responsibility. The first time I saw him in uniform was in Jammu when he was a captain posted in Srinagar. He drove down to Jammu just to meet me.
By dint of hard work and outstanding abilities, he grew up in his profession to dizzying heights. He would have been a richly deserved Lt. Gen. had fate had not been so cruel.
I spent over an hour with him in Referral Hospital , Delhi during his last days — chatting with him about good old days. Osman knew his time has come but, as always , he was brave and poised — a true soldier –enquiring about my welfare instead.
Am now left with all those fond memories of him and a dozen affectionate letters in that cultured hand writing of his.
My thanks are due to Mrs. Osman & children who do keep in touch — even till today..
May his soul rest in peace
