Captain Deepak Sharma KC

Captain Deepak Sharma hailed from Rohtak, Haryana and was born on 3 July 1983. He was the son of Shri Naresh Kumar Sharma and Smt. Indu Sharma. He completed his senior secondary education at Shiksha Bharti School in Rohtak, where he was known as a disciplined and determined student. From an early age, he was deeply influenced by the inspiring stories narrated by his grandfather, a veteran of World War II. These accounts of courage, sacrifice, and service to the nation left a lasting impression on young Deepak and sowed in him the dream of joining the Armed Forces. After completing his graduation from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, he resolved to turn his childhood aspiration into reality. With dedication and perseverance, he cleared the selection process and joined the Officers Training Academy, Chennai, as part of the SS-82 Course. The rigorous training further strengthened his resolve and prepared him for the challenges of military life. On 16 September 2006, he was commissioned into the Corps of Signals of the Indian Army. The Corps of Signals, often described as the “nervous system” of the Army, plays a critical role in establishing and maintaining communication networks during both operations and peace, ensuring seamless coordination among various formations.

Following his initial tenure in his first assignment, Captain Deepak Sharma was deputed in March 2008 to serve with 42 Rashtriya Rifles, a battalion deployed in Jammu and Kashmir for counter-insurgency operations. The 42 Rashtriya Rifles had earned an impressive reputation for conducting numerous successful cordon-and-search operations in the Kashmir Valley. Joining such a distinguished unit was both an honour and a challenge. Eager to prove his mettle and contribute meaningfully to its legacy, Captain Deepak Sharma embraced his responsibilities with courage, commitment, and a strong sense of duty to the nation.

Pulwama Operation: 04 March 2010

In March 2010, Captain Deepak Sharma’s unit, 42 RR Battalion, was deployed in the Pulwama district of South Kashmir, an area that had long remained a hotbed of militant activity. Both local and Pakistan-based militants were active in the region, continuously attempting to disrupt peace and destabilize the security situation. The volatile environment required security forces to remain in a constant state of vigilance, as infiltration attempts and terrorist operations were frequent. On 4 March 2010, acting on specific intelligence inputs, Captain Deepak Sharma and his team were assigned a high-risk mission in Dadsara village of Pulwama district. Terrorists belonging to Hizbul Mujahideen were reported to be hiding inside a residential house. The target structure was situated in a densely populated locality and was located in close proximity to a mosque. This made the operation particularly sensitive, as it demanded utmost precision and restraint to prevent collateral damage and ensure the safety of civilians. Demonstrating exceptional courage and clarity of purpose, Captain Deepak Sharma led from the front. Accompanied by his buddy, he entered the house through a window after tossing hand grenades to neutralize immediate threats. Inside the first room, he confronted a terrorist at close quarters and eliminated him in a swift and decisive action. Undeterred by intense hostile fire and a barrage of bullets directed at him, he then crawled toward the next room to continue the operation.

While advancing, he spotted two militants concealed beneath a staircase. Showing complete disregard for his own safety, he engaged them at close range and successfully neutralized both. However, during the fierce exchange of fire, Captain Deepak Sharma sustained a grievous bullet injury to his neck. Despite the best efforts made thereafter, he succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom in the line of duty. At just 26 years of age, Captain Deepak Sharma laid down his life in the service of the nation. A valiant soldier and a committed officer, he exemplified leadership, bravery, and selfless devotion to duty. In recognition of his extraordinary courage, indomitable spirit, and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, the nation’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award.
