Captain Deepak Singh SC

Captain Deepak Singh, was born in 1999 in the picturesque district of Almora, Uttarakhand. Growing up in a disciplined household as the son of Shri Mahesh Singh, a former police officer, Capt Deepak Singh was inspired early on by the noble values of duty and service. He shared his childhood with two loving sisters, Manisha and Jyoti, and his upbringing in such an environment naturally nurtured his dream of donning the uniform and serving the nation. From a young age, Capt Deepak Singh was drawn to the Armed Forces. This aspiration remained steadfast throughout his academic journey, and he worked diligently to turn his dream into reality. After completing his schooling, he joined the Indian Army through the Technical Entry Scheme (TES). His hard work and determination paid off as he successfully passed out from the prestigious Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Gaya in June 2020, earning his commission as a Lieutenant in the Corps of Signals. The Corps of Signals is a vital arm of the Indian Army, tasked with providing seamless communication support during both war and peace.

Assigned to a field unit upon commissioning, Capt Deepak Singh quickly honed his professional skills, demonstrating a remarkable ability to adapt to the rigors of military life. His natural leadership qualities and dedication soon saw him develop into a tough and capable soldier, respected by his peers and seniors alike. Besides his professional commitment, Capt Deepak Singh was a passionate sportsman, excelling particularly in hockey, a sport that symbolized his teamwork, discipline, and competitive spirit. After serving with his parent unit for a couple of years, Capt Deepak Singh was deputed to the 48 Rashtriya Rifles battalion. This prestigious battalion was deployed in the challenging terrain of Jammu and Kashmir, engaged in counter-insurgency operations.  As part of the 48 Rashtriya Rifles, he embraced the challenges of serving in one of the most demanding environments, driven by his desire to safeguard the nation and its people.

Assar Operation (Doda Dist: (J&K)): 13/14 Aug 2024

In 2024, Capt Deepak Singh’s unit 48 RR was deployed in the Doda district of J & K and was engaged in anti-insurgency operations. 48 RR battalion was operating as part of Counter Insurgency Force (CIF) (Delta Force) under the operational control of XVI Corps also known as 'White Knight Corps', one of the finest operational Corps of the Indian Army looking after the extent of Pir Panjal Ranges to the Shivalik Ranges and also the plains of Jammu and Akhnoor. The unit was operating in a militant-infested area and consequently, it had to undertake operations against the militants frequently. The LOC located near its AOR(Area of Responsibility) remained highly active and volatile with ceasefire violations occurring very often and without any warning. The area was also prone to infiltration, which necessitated regular armed patrols to check any infiltration from across the border. Based on the information from the intelligent sources, the unit decided to launch a search and cordon operation along with J&K Police on 13 Aug 2024 in the dense Shivgarh-Assar forest of Doda district.  It was located about 90 km from Doda town via NH 244 and 40 km from Patnitop in Udhampur district. Accordingly, a joint operation was launched in the late afternoon of 13 Aug 2024 along with J & K Police.

Acting on intelligence reports about the presence of terrorists in the area, two teams under Captain Deepak Singh's command were immediately deployed to neutralize the threat. With exceptional situational awareness, he swiftly set up surveillance at a vantage point, ensuring his team had the upper hand in the impending operation. As night fell, at 1930 hours, movement was detected. Without hesitation, Capt Deepak Singh maneuvered his column, closing in on the terrorists and delivering coordinated fire, injuring them in the process. However, the battle was far from over. The cover of darkness and the treacherous terrain, scattered with boulders and natural obstacles, made engagement increasingly challenging. Undeterred, he kept his team vigilant throughout the night, ensuring they maintained full operational control over the area. At first light, Captain Deepak Singh reorganized his team and launched a systematic search operation. His leadership led to the successful recovery of an M4 Assault Rifle, ammunition, and grenades, significantly weakening the enemy’s firepower. However, the operation took a dramatic turn when one of the injured terrorists, abandoned by his group, concealed himself among large boulders and suddenly opened fire on Captain Deepak Singh’s team.

Realizing the imminent danger to his fellow soldier under heavy enemy fire, Captain Deepak Singh displayed extraordinary selflessness and indomitable courage. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he pushed his buddy to safety behind the cover of the boulders, fully exposing himself to enemy fire in the process. In this act of sheer bravery, he sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite his grievous injuries, Captain Deepak Singh did not falter. Summoning every ounce of his strength, he closed in on the terrorist and engaged in a final exchange of fire, inflicting severe injuries on the enemy. His unwavering spirit and commitment to his mission ensured that the terrorist was neutralized, preventing further harm to his men. In his final moments, Captain Deepak Singh embodied the highest ideals of valour and selfless sacrifice, laying down his life in the finest traditions of the Indian Army. He made the supreme sacrifice at the age of 25 years in the service of the nation and would always be remembered for his exceptional courage and steadfast devotion to his duty. Captain Deepak Singh was posthumously honoured with the prestigious "Shaurya Chakra" on 26th January 2025 in recognition of his exceptional bravery, steadfast devotion to duty, and selfless service to the nation.

Capt Deepak Singh is survived by his father Shri Mahesh Singh, mother and two sisters Smt Manisha & Smt Jyoti.

Just a little correction. He joined the army right after his school through TES . He passed out from OTA Gaya.
