Op Rakshak (J&K): 25 Feb 2000

During Feb 2000, Captain Gurpratap Singh Chahal's unit 20 Sikh was deployed in Jammu and Kashmir, as part of a critical counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir, a region plagued by insurgent activity. The unit was deployed in a region heavily infested with militant activity, necessitating frequent counter-insurgency operations. The Line of Control (LoC), situated within the unit’s Area of Responsibility (AOR), was a highly active and volatile zone, frequently witnessing unprovoked ceasefire violations. These incidents often occurred without warning, heightening the tension and operational demands in the area. The region was also a hotspot for infiltration attempts, requiring regular armed patrols to monitor and prevent cross-border intrusions. Acting on intelligence reports, the unit planned and launched a meticulously coordinated operation on 25 February 2000 to address the emerging threat.

The mission was aimed at neutralizing a group of heavily armed militants who had entrenched themselves in a remote, rugged area. The terrorists were not only well-equipped but also strategically positioned, making the operation exceptionally challenging and dangerous. Despite the high risks involved, Captain Chahal, known for his steadfast commitment to duty and fearless leadership, took charge of the mission. Leading his team from the front, he carefully orchestrated the operation, ensuring his soldiers were strategically placed to engage the terrorists effectively. The encounter soon escalated into a fierce gunfight, with heavy exchange of fire from both sides. Amidst the chaos and danger, Captain Chahal displayed extraordinary courage and tactical brilliance. Undeterred by the relentless barrage of enemy fire, he continued to lead his troops with unwavering resolve, inspiring them to stay focused and determined. In the heat of battle, Captain Chahal made the ultimate decision to personally engage the militants at close quarters, knowing full well the risks to his own life. However, during this intense confrontation, Captain Chahal sustained severe injuries. Despite his critical condition, he continued to fight valiantly, ensuring the safety of his comrades and the success of the mission. His selflessness and heroism were evident in his unwavering focus on the operation, even as he made the ultimate sacrifice.

Captain Gurpratap Singh Chahal's actions on that fateful day epitomized the highest ideals of bravery, leadership, and devotion to duty. His sacrifice was not in vain, as the mission was successfully accomplished, dealing a significant blow to the militant group and securing the area for local residents. In recognition of his exceptional valour and supreme sacrifice, Captain Gurpratap Singh Chahal was posthumously awarded the "Sena Medal", a prestigious honour bestowed upon soldiers who demonstrate extraordinary gallantry in the face of the enemy. Captain Gurpratap Singh Chahal is survived by his mother Smt Manjit Kaur.
