Son of Shri Udaypal Singh Sharawat and Smt Shrangari Devi, he got selected for the prestigious NDA after finishing school. He later went to  IMA Dehradun for further training and passed out as a Second Lieutenant on December 13, 1980, at the age of 23 years. He was commissioned into the 18th Madras Battalion of the Madras Regiment, an infantry regiment known for its fearless soldiers and numerous battle exploits.

He served in various operational areas along with his unit, after being commissioned, and developed into a fine officer with commendable soldierly skills. After serving for some time, he got married to Ms Usha and the couple had a daughter Natasha, and son Vasudev. By the year 2002, he had put in over twenty years of service and had been promoted to the rank of Colonel. In the year 2002, he was serving with the 8 RR Battalion, deployed in J&K for counter-insurgency operations.

Doda Operation: 20 Aug 2002

In 2002, Col Harendra Kumar Sharawat’s unit 8 RR was deployed in the Doda district of J & K and was engaged in anti-insurgency operations. Col HK Sharawat was functioning as the 'Commanding Officer' of 8 RR as part of the 'Delta' Counter Insurgency Force under the operational control of XVI Corps of Indian Army. The unit was operating in a militant-infested area and consequently, it had to undertake operations against the militants frequently. The LOC located near its AOR(Area of Responsibility) remained highly active and volatile with ceasefire violations occurring very often and without any warning. The area was also prone to infiltration, which necessitated regular armed patrols to check any infiltration from across the border. Following inputs from intelligence sources about the presence of some terrorists, the security forces decided to launch a search operation in the Marmat tehsil of Doda district in J & K on 20 Aug 2002. On the morining of 20 Aug, Col HK Sharawat decided to go to the suspected area to oversee the operation as he always believed in leading from the front.

This visit by a high-ranking officer was probably known to the militants and as a result, an insidious plan was hatched by them. The militants detonated the remote-controlled IED planted on the road in the Marmat area. At around 8:30 a.m., the IED exploded, with a devastating effect. Col HK Sharawat and two other soldiers bore the brunt of the attack and got severely injured. However, Col HK Sharawat soon succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. Col HK Sharawat was a committed soldier and an officer par excellence, who laid down his life in the line of his duty following the highest traditions of the Indian Army. He was given the gallantry award, "Sena Medal" for his commendable bravery, devotion to duty, leadership, and supreme sacrifice.

Colonel Harendra Kumar Sharawat is survived by his wife Smt Usha Sharawat, daughter Natasha Sharawat, and son Major Vasudev Sharawat(Serving in the Army).
