Group Captain Om Prakash Taneja, a distinguished son of New Delhi, was born on October 29, 1928, in Punjab, which was then part of British India, to Shri Bashi Lal Taneja. Raised in a household that instilled discipline and a strong sense of service, he was destined for a life of dedication to his country. At the age of 22, Group Captain Om Prakash Taneja embarked on his illustrious career with the Indian Air Force (IAF), receiving his commission on April 15, 1950, as part of the 51/52 Pilots’ Course. He joined the prestigious flying stream, quickly establishing himself as an exceptional fighter pilot known for his remarkable skill, commitment, and perseverance.

Throughout his career, Gp Capt Om Prakash Taneja served with distinction in numerous flying squadrons across various Air Force bases. His relentless pursuit of excellence enabled him to refine his skills and gain invaluable experience in air operations. As he rose through the ranks, he earned the respect and admiration of his peers and superiors alike. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Gp Capt Taneja remained a devoted family man. He married Ms. Zohra, and together they had two sons, Rahil and Nikhil, and a daughter, Sanjana. Despite his demanding career, he successfully balanced his responsibilities as a father and husband with his duties as a fighter pilot.

In 1955, he was promoted to Flight Lieutenant and shortly thereafter, he was appointed as a fighter aircraft instructor at the esteemed Air Force Flying College (AFFC) in Dundigal, Andhra Pradesh (now Telangana). His selection for this prestigious role within just five years of service spoke volumes about his extraordinary skills and dedication to the profession. By 1961, having completed a decade of distinguished service, he was promoted to Squadron Leader. Recognized for his proficiency in air operations and his ability to mentor and inspire future pilots, Gp Capt Taneja was widely respected within the IAF. In 1965, while serving as an instructor at the AFFC, he was posted as Wg Cdr to the 1st Squadron at Adampur Air Force Station, Punjab, just months before the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965. This transfer was a testament to the trust the Air Force had in his abilities, as the squadron played a pivotal role during the conflict.

Sargodha Air Attack (Indo-Pak War): 07 Sep 1965

In September 1965, during the Indo-Pak War, Gp Capt Om Prakash Taneja (As Wg Cdr) was serving as 'Commanding Officer' (CO) of 1 Squadron of the Indian Air Force (IAF), known as "The Tigers". Formed on 1 April 1933 at Karachi, the squadron was initially equipped with Westland Wapiti aircraft. In 1953 the Squadron moved to Palam and then to Air Force Base at Kalaikunda in 1957 with Squadron Leader Dilbagh Singh(who later became Chief of Air Staff) as its commanding officer. Over the years, it evolved into a premier fighter unit. By 1964, it had moved to Air Force Station Adampur, Punjab, under the leadership of then Wing Commander Om Prakash Taneja. When the war broke out, the squadron was tasked with defending the Punjab sector and providing air cover to Indian forces penetrating deep into enemy territory. As part of the IAF’s strategy to neutralize the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), a daring air strike was planned on the heavily defended Sargodha Air Base.

Gp Capt Om Prakash Taneja displayed exceptional leadership and bravery during the 1965 operations against Pakistan. As Squadron Commander, he exemplified tactical brilliance and unwavering commitment to his duty, consistently leading by example in perilous conditions. On September 6, 1965, then Wing Commander Taneja led his Squadron on its first strike mission into enemy territory, targeting fuel wagons in the Gujranwala sector. This mission marked the start of his pivotal role in spearheading successful operations throughout the conflict. The following day, September 7, 1965, then Wing Commander Taneja led a formation of 12 aircraft in a dawn strike against the Sargodha Airfield. Despite an air raid warning and the looming threat of anti-aircraft fire, Taneja remained calm under pressure, ensuring the mission's success. The airfield sustained significant damage, and with runway lights destroyed, then Wg Cdr Taneja displayed extraordinary courage by taking off from a compromised runway in the early hours of the morning. His tactical acumen allowed his Squadron to strike at low altitudes with pinpoint precision, a testament to his leadership and innovative approach under challenging circumstances.

In the days that followed, he as CO continued to lead multiple successful strike sorties in the Lahore and Sialkot sectors. His missions were highly effective in destroying enemy tanks, vehicle concentrations, and artillery positions, which significantly impacted the enemy’s military capabilities in these areas. Beyond his military prowess, Gp Capt Taneja’s leadership had a profound effect on his Squadron. His actions and determination in the face of danger inspired a sense of confidence and courage among his junior pilots. His ability to remain calm under pressure, coupled with his commitment to achieving the mission objectives, earned him the admiration and respect of all who served under him. His exemplary conduct during these operations not only contributed to the success of his Squadron but also set a high standard for leadership in combat. He was conferred with the "Vir Chakra" in recognition of his exceptional gallantry, outstanding leadership, and exemplary professional skill.
