Grenadier Mohammad Ikram Khan was born in 1976 in Rolsahebsar village, nestled in Fatehpur tehsil of Sikar district, Rajasthan. He was the son of Capt Iqbal Khan and came from the esteemed Kayamkhani family, known for their legacy of service to the nation. His father, Capt Iqbal Khan Kayamkhani, had also served the country with distinction, instilling a strong sense of patriotism and duty in the family. Growing up in a household that upheld the values of discipline, patriotism, and service, young Mohammad Ikram Khan imbibed these ideals from an early age. His deep-rooted desire to serve the nation led him to pursue a career in the armed forces. In 1994, he joined the prestigious Grenadiers Regiment of the Indian Army, renowned for its illustrious history and gallant soldiers. After completing his rigorous military training, Gdr Mohammad Ikram Khan was inducted into the 6 Grenadiers Battalion. As a soldier, he demonstrated exceptional dedication, discipline, and courage, earning the respect and admiration of his comrades.

In 1999, when the Kargil War broke out, the nation faced significant challenges on its borders. Amid this tense situation, Gdr Mohammad Ikram Khan’s battalion was deployed in Jammu and Kashmir under "Operation Rakshak," a critical counter-insurgency operation aimed at neutralizing terrorist threats and ensuring the safety of the region. His unit operated in extremely challenging conditions, often facing harsh terrains, adverse weather, and the constant threat of enemy attacks. Grenadier Khan and his battalion remained stationed in Jammu and Kashmir throughout the year 2000, playing a vital role in combating insurgency and maintaining peace in the region.

Operation Rakshak (J&K) : 12 Apr 2000

On April 7, 2000, Gdr Mohammad Ikram Khan, serving in the 6 Grenadiers Battalion, was part of a search operation in Naiti village, located in Rajouri district, Jammu and Kashmir. The operation was conducted as part of counter-insurgency efforts under "Operation Rakshak," aimed at neutralizing terrorist threats in the region. The mission took the search team into dense forests, where terrorists had taken shelter, using the rugged terrain to their advantage. As the team advanced, they suddenly came under heavy gunfire from the terrorists, who were armed with sophisticated weapons. Despite the intense and life-threatening situation, Grenadier Ikram remained composed and focused. Amid the chaos, he spotted two terrorists attempting to flee uphill. Displaying quick thinking and unwavering resolve, he, along with his comrades, gave chase.

In the ensuing pursuit, Grenadier Ikram successfully shot one terrorist, eliminating the threat. He also injured the second terrorist, who retreated and took cover, seeking a tactical advantage. Undeterred, Grenadier Ikram advanced towards the injured terrorist, determined to neutralize him. However, as he closed in, the terrorist unleashed a barrage of indiscriminate gunfire. In the exchange, Grenadier Ikram was critically wounded, suffering a bullet injury near his eye. Despite his injuries, the operation was successful, with the second terrorist neutralized and a cache of weapons and ammunition recovered from the site. Grenadier Ikram was immediately evacuated to the military hospital in Udhampur, where he was placed under intensive medical care. For nine days, the medical team worked tirelessly to save his life. However, despite their best efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on April 12, 2000, making the ultimate sacrifice in the service of the nation.

Gdr Mohammad Ikram Khan displayed exemplary bravery in the face of grave danger, prioritizing the mission and the safety of his comrades above his own life. In recognition of his exceptional valour and supreme sacrifice, Gdr Mohammad Ikram Khan was posthumously awarded the "Shaurya Chakra", one of India’s highest peacetime gallantry awards.
