Lance Naik Parsaram Jat SC

Lance Naik Parsaram Jat hailed from Nagaur district of Rajasthan and was born on 01 Jan 1962. Son of Shri Hardina Ram and Smt Gogi Devi, Lance Naik Parsaram studied from a Government school at Nagaur. He was a keen sportsman since his childhood and had excelled in various sports activities especially wrestling during his school days. Besides sports, he had a keen interest in serving in the Armed Forces and always nursed the idea of wearing the Indian Army uniform. Consequently, he joined the Army on 04 October 1980 and was recruited into 3 Grenadiers of the Grenadiers Regiment, a Regiment known for its fearless soldiers and numerous battle honours.

Later on 21st Feb 1982, Lance Naik Parsaram got married to Mangani Devi. By 1995, Lance Naik Parsaram had put in about 15 years of service in the Army and had served with his unit in various operational areas with challenging working conditions. Lance Naik Parsaram had developed into a committed and battle-hardened soldier who was ready to prove his mettle in any given operation.

Kupwara Operation: 10 Aug 1995

During 1995, Lance Naik Parsaram’s unit 3 Grenadiers was deployed in Kupwara district of J & K and was engaged in counter-insurgency operations on a frequent basis. As the area was near the LOC and prone to infiltration by the militants, the unit had to maintain a high state of alert at all times. The unit received information from the intelligence sources about the presence of militants in Wandrawal forest area of Kupwara district and decided to launch a search and destroy operation on 10 Aug 1995.  Lance Naik Parsaram was part of the team that was assigned the task of neutralizing the threat of the militants in the unit’s area of responsibility.

The team as planned reached the suspected area and launched the operation. As the operation was underway the troops were attacked by the group of militants hiding in the area. The militants were heavily armed and taking advantage of the thick foliage fired at the troops from vantage points. Lance Naik Parsaram who was acting as a scout for the assault team quickly signaled his comrades to take positions to retaliate. A fierce gun battle ensued thereafter with a heavy exchange of fire. In the meantime, Lance Naik Parsaram  observed that a militant hiding behind a boulder was firing incessantly and proving to be a serious threat to the lives of his comrades. Lance Naik Parsaram without caring for his safety quickly decided to neutralize that militant and got down to crawl to his position.

Crawling for over 10 meters through the hail of bullets, Lance Naik Parsaram finally reached the intended position and killed the militant. However one more militant emerged from the other side and fired at Lance Naik Parsaram. Lance Naik Parsaram got seriously injured but unnerved he kept firing and managed to kill the other militant too. Lance Naik Parsaram later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. Lance Naik Parsaram Jat displayed exceptional courage , fighting spirit and devotion to duty of a very high order during the operation. Lance Naik Parsaram Jat was given the gallantry award, “Shaurya Chakra” for his conspicuous bravery, resoluteness and supreme sacrifice.
