Inspired by stories of bravery and the selfless service of soldiers who safeguarded the nation, he developed a strong desire to serve in the military. With unwavering resolve and a clear sense of purpose, he pursued his dream of joining the Indian Army, driven by a commitment to contribute to the nation’s defence. Upon induction into the Army, he was posted to the 282 Medium Regiment of the Regiment of Artillery, one of the key combat support arms of the Indian Army. Op Parakram (Drass Sector): 09 Dec 2002

During the period of heightened military preparedness under Operation Parakram in 2002, Gunner Kumar Singh was serving with the 282 Medium Regiment of the Regiment of Artillery, deployed in the Drass sector of Kargil district along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. This region, known for its forbidding terrain and extreme climatic conditions, demanded exceptional endurance and alertness from the troops. High-altitude posts, sub-zero temperatures, heavy snowfall, and the constant risk of avalanches made routine duties arduous, yet Gunner Kumar Singh and his comrades remained resolute, maintaining unwavering vigilance over the sensitive forward positions. On 09 December 2002, Pakistani Army troops initiated unprovoked firing on Indian positions in the Drass sector. Gunner Kumar Singh was manning a forward post when the enemy launched intense shelling using mortars and heavy weapons. Confronted with sudden and heavy enemy fire, he displayed exemplary courage and composure. Remaining steadfast at his post, he continued to carry out his responsibilities with determination and professionalism. The Indian Army responded promptly and effectively, engaging the adversary in a sustained and fierce exchange of fire to defend its positions.

During the course of this intense engagement, Gunner Kumar Singh sustained multiple splinter injuries due to continuous enemy shelling. Despite being grievously wounded and in severe pain, he refused to abandon his post. Demonstrating extraordinary resilience and devotion to duty, he continued to hold his position under relentless enemy fire. The situation was further compounded by the intensity of shelling, which made immediate evacuation extremely difficult and delayed medical assistance. Fighting against his injuries with remarkable grit, Gunner Kumar Singh upheld the finest traditions of the Indian Army. However, the severity of his wounds proved fatal, and he ultimately succumbed, making the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. In the same operation on 9 Dec 2002, Gunner Pankaj Kumar also laid down his life, further underscoring the courage and steadfast commitment displayed by the soldiers deployed in the sector. Gunner Kumar Singh’s actions in the face of grave danger reflected exceptional bravery, unwavering dedication, and selfless service to the nation.

Gunner Kumar Singh is survived by his wife Smt Shila Devi.
