Gunner Sandip Kumar

Gunner Sandip Kumar was born on March 13, 1976, in Narkatiya village, located in Bhagalpur district, Bihar. He was the son of Shri Awadesh Kumar Sharma and Smt Mula Devi. Growing up in a rural village, Gnr Sandip's early life was marked by a strong sense of responsibility and a deep love for his country. He attended Gauripur High School in Lattipur, a small village in the Shahkund Block of Bhagalpur District, where he excelled both academically and in extracurricular activities. Even from a young age, his dedication to his studies and sense of duty set him apart as a disciplined and determined individual. It was during these formative years that Gnr Sandip's deep patriotism blossomed, and his dream of serving the nation in the Indian Army was firmly established.

After completing his schooling, Gunner Sandip Kumar joined the Indian Army on January 6, 1996, at the age of 20. He was recruited into the 109 Light Air Defence (AD) Regiment, which is a crucial part of the Corps of Army Air Defence. This unit's primary responsibility was to protect the nation's airspace from external threats, and Gnr Sandip took great pride in being part of such an essential defence role. Over the years, Gunner Sandip Kumar proved himself as a reliable and skilled soldier, earning the respect and admiration of both his peers and superiors.  Aside from his exemplary military service, Gunner Sandip Kumar was also a devoted family man. He married Ms. Sunita Kumari, and together they were blessed with two children: a son, Manish Kumar, and a daughter, Sima Kumari. Despite the demands of his military service, Gnr Sandip always made time for his family, and they were a source of immense pride and joy in his life.

As his military career progressed, Gnr Sandip was posted to serve with the 611 (Independent) Air Defence Brigade, which was deployed in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) for counter-insurgency operations. By 2001, after nearly five years of service, he had already gained extensive experience in various operational areas, many of which were located in difficult and high-stakes environments. His time in J&K, a region known for its volatile conditions, further honed his skills and reinforced his commitment to safeguarding the nation.

Kupwara Operation : 25 Aug 2001

During 2007, Gunner Sandip Kumar was serving with his unit deployed along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kupwara sector of Jammu and Kashmir. This region was known for its constant volatility due to frequent ceasefire violations and unprovoked firing by Pakistani forces. Gunner Sandip Kumar and his comrades manned a forward post situated at Anil Spur, a strategic military location. Positioned at an altitude of 4,500 meters, this post faced extremely challenging conditions, including rugged and treacherous terrain, low visibility, and sub-zero temperatures ranging between -3°C to -5°C.

Anil Spur Post held immense tactical importance due to its proximity to known infiltration routes often used by militants attempting to cross the LoC. Indian Army soldiers stationed here were entrusted with monitoring infiltration attempts, maintaining constant vigilance, and securing India’s territorial integrity. The harsh conditions and the ongoing threat of enemy activity made their tasks exceptionally demanding. On one such mission, Gunner Sandip Kumar was assigned to an area domination patrol near Anil Spur Post. These patrols were critical in asserting control, deterring infiltration, and ensuring the safety of the region. While navigating the hazardous terrain during the patrol, Gunner Sandip Kumar tragically lost his footing and fell approximately 400 meters down a steep slope. The fall caused him to sustain severe head injuries.

Despite immediate efforts to evacuate him to the nearest medical facility, the injuries proved too grave.  He soon succombed to his injuries owing to internal hemorrhaging caused by the fall. His loss underscored the perilous nature of duties performed by soldiers posted in such hostile environments, where every step could pose a life-threatening risk.  Gunner Sandip Kumar’s dedication and sacrifice exemplified the commitment and courage of Indian Army soldiers serving in some of the most difficult conditions to safeguard the nation’s borders.

He is survived by his wife Smt Sunita Kumari, his son Shri Manish Kumar, and his daughter Ms Sima Kumari.

Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it, it flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it
