Pulwama Operation : 12th Feb 2019

During the year 2019, Hav Baljeet Singh’s unit 50 RR, was deployed in Pulwama district of J&K. The Pulwama district of South Kashmir had been the hotbed for local as well as Pakistani militants, who were incessantly seeking the opportunity to destabilize the peace in that area. The Armed Forces maintained a high state of alert in the area to counter the infiltration attempts. There were numerous operations launched by the security forces to flush out the terrorists to maintain peace. On 11 Feb 2019, the security forces unit had received credible information from the intelligence sources about the presence of terrorists in Ratnipora area of Pulwama district. After analyzing the situation a decision was taken by the security forces to launch a joint operation to flush out the terrorists. Consequently, the joint team comprising members of Army’s 50 RR unit, 10 Para , the state police’s Special Operations Group(SOG) and 183/182 battalion of CRPF swung into action and launched the operation in the wee hours of 12 Feb 2019.

The assault team reached the site and cordoned off the suspected area in Ratnipora village.  On being challenged the terrorists opened fire at the security troops and a fierce gun battle ensued thereafter, which continued for several hours. However during the heavy exchange of fire, Hav Baljeet Singh along with two more soldiers, Sepoy Saneed and Naik Chander Pal of 10 Para sustained serious injuries. The injured soldiers were shifted to Army’s 92 base hospital at Badamibagh in Srinagar, but Hav Baljeet Singh succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. Hav Baljeet Singh was a courageous and dedicated soldier who laid down his life in the service of the nation.

Hav Baljeet Singh is survived by his parents, wife Aruna, son and a daughter
