Hav Kashiray Bammanalli SC

Havildar Kashiray Bammanalli hailed from Ukkal village in Basavana Bagewadi tehsil of Vijayapura district, Karnataka. Born in the year 1984, he grew up with strong values of dedication, perseverance, and service to the nation. After completing his initial education, he was drawn toward the Indian Army and eventually joined in 2006 at the age of 22. His commitment and determination led him to be recruited into the Corps of Engineers, a crucial combat support arm of the Indian Army responsible for mobility, counter-mobility, and various engineering tasks in both peace and war. From the beginning of his military career, Hav Kashiray Bammanalli displayed immense dedication, discipline, and a thirst for professional excellence. Over the years, he honed his skills and established himself as a proficient soldier, excelling in both engineering tasks and operational duties. After serving for a significant period with his parent corps, he was deputed to serve with the 44 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) Battalion. The Rashtriya Rifles is a specialized counter-insurgency force tasked with tackling militant activities in the volatile regions of Jammu and Kashmir.

By the year 2021, Hav Kashiray had completed nearly 15 years of dedicated service in the Army. Throughout his tenure, he had served in multiple challenging operational environments, demonstrating remarkable courage, resilience, and professionalism. His deployment with the 44 RR Battalion placed him at the forefront of counter-insurgency operations, where he contributed significantly to maintaining peace and security in the region.

Pulwama Operation: 01st July 2021

By July 2021, Hav Kashiray Bammanalli was serving with the 44 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) Battalion, which was deployed in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. The battalion was actively engaged in counter-insurgency operations, conducting regular missions to neutralize militant threats and ensure peace in the region. The volatile and unpredictable nature of the operational environment demanded constant vigilance and a high level of combat readiness from every soldier. On 30 June 2021, intelligence sources provided credible information regarding the presence of heavily armed terrorists in Hanjan village, located within the battalion’s Area of Responsibility (AOR). Given the strategic importance of swiftly neutralizing the threat, the unit leadership decided to launch an immediate cordon and search operation to either apprehend or eliminate the terrorists. Recognized for his combat skills and leadership, Hav Kashiray Bammanalli was assigned to be a key part of the Combat Action Team, entrusted with the critical task of sealing off the terrorists' potential escape routes.

As planned, Hav Kashiray and his team moved under the cover of darkness and reached the suspected hideout. By the night of 30 June 2021, they had strategically positioned themselves around the area and initiated a coordinated search operation. Hav Kashiray took charge of securing the outer perimeter, positioning himself along an orchard—a likely escape route for the terrorists. At 2315 hours, the terrorists, realizing they were surrounded, made a desperate attempt to flee. They lobbed grenades and opened indiscriminate fire in Hav Kashiray’s direction, attempting to break through the cordon. Undeterred, he responded with precise and effective fire, forcing the terrorists back into their hideout, preventing their escape. The situation escalated further at 2350 hours, when the terrorists launched a second, more aggressive attempt to breach the cordon. This time, they unleashed heavy fire and threw multiple grenades at Hav Kashiray’s position. Amidst the intense crossfire, he sustained a grievous chest injury. Despite excruciating pain and heavy bleeding, Hav Kashiray remained resolute. Displaying remarkable courage, he continued engaging the terrorists and managed to eliminate one of them, significantly weakening the enemy’s firepower.

Realizing the imminent danger to his team, he crawled forward to a vantage position, fully aware of the life-threatening risks. From this advanced position, he engaged three more terrorists in close combat, neutralizing them with accurate fire, thereby safeguarding his fellow soldiers from a deadly assault. However, in the process of eliminating the terrorists, Hav Kashiray sustained critical injuries. His comrades immediately evacuated him to the 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar for urgent medical attention. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, he succumbed to his injuries and was martyred, making the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. Hav Kashiray Bammanalli’s unflinching bravery, exceptional combat leadership, and indomitable spirit earned him the nation’s gratitude and honour. In recognition of his extraordinary courage and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the "Shaurya Chakra", India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award, on 26 January 2022.

Hav Kashiray Bammanalli is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
