Kupwara Operation: 20 May 2017

During May 2017, Havildar Damar Bahadur Pun’s unit, 4/1 Gorkha Rifles, was deployed in the Kupwara district of Jammu & Kashmir, a highly sensitive sector along the Line of Control (LoC). The unit was entrusted with the critical responsibility of manning forward posts in the Naugam sector of Handwara, an area frequently targeted by militants for infiltration due to its dense forests and rugged terrain. Maintaining constant vigilance in such an environment was essential to prevent any breach. On the night of 20 May 2017, militants attempted to infiltrate into the unit’s Area of Responsibility. Demonstrating alertness and operational acumen, Hav Damar Bahadur and his team detected suspicious movement along the infiltration route. Acting swiftly and decisively, they moved to intercept the infiltrators, leading to a fierce and prolonged gun battle. The militants were heavily armed and attempted to exploit the challenging terrain and thick jungle cover to their advantage. Undeterred, Hav Damar Bahadur and his comrades engaged the enemy with determination, courage, and tactical precision. The intense exchange of fire continued for nearly 36 hours, reflecting the endurance and fighting spirit of the soldiers.

Leading from the front, Hav Damar Bahadur displayed exceptional bravery and resolve, motivating his team throughout the operation. In the face of sustained enemy fire, the troops successfully eliminated four militants, thereby foiling the infiltration attempt and safeguarding the region. However, during the course of this prolonged engagement, Havildar Damar Bahadur Pun, along with his fellow soldiers Havildar Giris Gurung and Rifleman Rabin Sharma, sustained grievous injuries. Despite their courageous fight and the best possible medical care, they later succumbed to their injuries, making the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. Havildar Damar Bahadur Pun’s actions exemplified outstanding courage, leadership, and unwavering devotion to duty. For his gallantry and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the “Sena Medal.” His sacrifice remains a shining testament to his valour and the indomitable spirit of the Indian soldier, and he will always be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.

Hav Damar Bahadur Pun is survived by his wife Smt Kalpana Pun and two children.
