Havildar Narayan Raghunath Bhonde hailed from Pimpalgaon village in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, a region known for its proud legacy of producing brave and dedicated soldiers for the nation. Born into a humble farming family, he grew up in financially challenging circumstances. Despite these hardships, he remained determined to build a better future for himself and his loved ones. After completing his 12th grade in the science stream, he nurtured a strong ambition to join the Armed Forces and serve his country. On 21st August 1996, he began his military journey by commencing his training at the Army Service Corps (ASC) Centre (South) in Bangalore. Upon successfully completing his training, he was inducted into the 503 ASC Battalion of the Army Service Corps. The Army Service Corps (ASC) is the vital logistics arm of the Indian Army, responsible for ensuring that troops are continuously supplied with essential resources in peace and war. Its primary role includes the provision of rations, fuel, lubricants, and transport support to formations deployed across diverse terrains—from deserts and plains to high-altitude areas. The Corps plays a crucial role in maintaining operational readiness by managing supply chains, transportation networks, and logistical planning.
Throughout his distinguished career, Havildar Bhonde served in various challenging postings across the country, including Pathankot, Bihar, Bangalore, Jammu, Delhi, Guwahati, and the demanding terrains of Leh-Ladakh. In every location, he carried out his duties with unwavering dedication and professionalism. In 2003, he entered into matrimony, got married to Ms Ambika and was blessed with a son in 2005 and a daughter in 2008. He balanced his family responsibilities and professional commitments with remarkable sincerity and integrity. Havildar Bhonde was known for his kind-hearted nature and compassionate spirit. Line of Actual Control Operation: 03 Apr 2015
In April 2015, Havildar Narayan Raghunath Bhonde’s unit, 503 ASC Battalion, was deployed in Leh-Ladakh near the Line of Actual Control (LAC). This region is among the most inhospitable and strategically sensitive areas in the country. The extremely high-altitude terrain, coupled with severe climatic conditions, makes survival itself a daily challenge. Temperatures in this region can plunge to as low as minus 60 degrees Celsius, accompanied by fierce winds, heavy snowfall, and frequent blizzards. The thin air at such elevations often leads to high-altitude sickness, while the constant risk of frostbite and avalanches adds to the dangers faced by soldiers. The unit was deployed in the Saltoro Ridge sector, a strategically crucial area located southwest of the Siachen Glacier. This region holds immense military importance due to its proximity to sensitive borders and its commanding vantage points. Soldiers stationed there not only remain vigilant against potential enemy threats but also confront relentless natural hazards such as sudden avalanches, landslides, and treacherous icy terrain. Serving in such conditions demands extraordinary courage, endurance, discipline, and unwavering commitment to duty.
On 3rd April 2015, tragedy struck when a sudden avalanche occurred in the Karu area of Leh-Ladakh. The avalanche triggered a massive landslide that buried several soldiers under snow and debris. Havildar Narayan Raghunath Bhonde, along with five other jawans, went missing in the disaster. Immediate rescue operations were launched despite the extremely hazardous weather and terrain. After relentless search efforts lasting nine to ten days, the other five soldiers were located. However, Havildar Bhonde remained untraced. Rescue teams continued their search with determination and hope, battling the harsh environment for weeks. After an agonizing wait of one and a half months, his mortal remains were finally recovered after 45 days. His supreme sacrifice in the line of duty stands as a testament to his courage and dedication to the nation. For his children, his family, and all who knew him, he remains a symbol of bravery, resilience, and selfless service to the motherland.
Havildar Narayan Raghunath Bhonde is survived by his wife, Smt Ambika Narayan, son Shri Anuj Narayan Bhonde and daughter.
