Sepoy Dharma Ram Beniwal SC

Sepoy Dharma Ram Beniwal hailed from Taratara village in the Barmer district of Rajasthan, a region known for its hardy and resilient people. He was born on 21 December 1983 to Shri Gang Ram Beniwal and Smt. Amru Devi. Growing up in a rural environment, he imbibed values of discipline, perseverance, and a deep sense of duty from an early age. Driven by a desire to serve the nation, he joined the Indian Army on 23 July 2003 at the age of 19, soon after completing his initial education. He was inducted into the 4th Battalion of the Mahar Regiment, a distinguished infantry regiment known for its gallant history and steadfast service to the nation. During his early years in the Army, Sepoy Dharma Ram underwent rigorous military training and steadily evolved into a disciplined and dependable soldier. He served with his battalion in various operational areas across different terrains, gaining valuable field experience under diverse and often challenging conditions. These tenures helped him develop strong combat skills, adaptability, and a keen understanding of operational dynamics. On the personal front, he got married to Ms. Timu Devi in 2007. The couple was blessed with two children—a daughter, Rajeshwari, and a son, Harish. Despite the demands of military life, he remained a devoted family man, balancing his responsibilities with quiet strength and commitment.

Recognizing his capability and professionalism, he was later deputed to a unit of the Rashtriya Rifles, which was actively engaged in counter-insurgency operations in the challenging terrain of Jammu & Kashmir. Serving in such an environment required not only physical endurance but also constant vigilance, courage, and mental resilience—qualities that Sepoy Dharma Ram exemplified through his conduct and dedication.

Kulgam Operation (J&K): 25 May 2015

During 2015, Sepoy Dharma Ram Beniwal was serving with 1st Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles, deployed in the Kulgam sector of Jammu & Kashmir—an area marked by frequent counter-insurgency operations. On 25 May 2015, he was part of a patrol led by Major Kobitirha Sanyal, tasked to move towards village Kanjikul in Kulgam district based on specific intelligence inputs regarding militant presence. At approximately 1300 hours, as the patrol approached the target area, it suddenly came under intense and heavy fire from militants concealed inside a nearby house. Reacting with remarkable presence of mind, Sepoy Dharma Ram immediately alerted his team to the direction of the incoming fire, thereby preventing potential casualties. Without hesitation, he took the initiative to engage the terrorists, drawing their attention towards himself and shielding his comrades from the initial onslaught. In the fierce exchange of fire that followed, Sepoy Dharma Ram sustained two bullet injuries. Despite being grievously wounded, he remained resolute and continued to fight. Displaying exceptional field craft and determination, he crawled to a tactically advantageous position under continuous enemy fire. From there, he brought down accurate and sustained fire on the terrorist, ultimately neutralizing him. The slain militant was later identified as a district commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, a significant operational success for the security forces.

Severely injured, Sepoy Dharma Ram was initially evacuated to the battalion headquarters for immediate medical aid and was subsequently airlifted to the 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar for advanced treatment. Despite the best medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries, making the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. Sepoy Dharma Ram Beniwal displayed exceptional courage, unwavering determination, and devotion to duty in the face of grave danger. For his conspicuous gallantry and selfless sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra. His actions stand as a testament to the highest traditions of the Indian Army.

Sepoy Dharma Ram is survived by his father Shri Gang Ram Beniwal, mother Smt Amru Devi, wife Smt Timu Devi, daughter Kumari Rajeshwari and son Master Harish.
