Lance Naik Bhawan Singh hailed from Simayal village in Berinag tehsil of Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand. From an early age, he exhibited qualities of determination, discipline, and patriotism, which led him to join the Indian Army. He was recruited into the 2nd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment, an elite unit known for its specialized training and high-risk counter-terrorism operations. In 2006, his battalion was deployed in Kupwara district, a strategically significant border region of Jammu and Kashmir, known for its dense forests and rugged terrain, which made it a frequent infiltration route for terrorists. The area was highly volatile, with ongoing counter-insurgency operations aimed at neutralizing terrorist threats. Lance Naik Bhawan Singh, along with his battalion, was actively engaged in these operations, displaying unwavering commitment to the nation's security.
On March 19, 2007, intelligence sources provided credible information about the presence of heavily armed terrorists hiding in the Lolab Valley of Kupwara district. Given the strategic importance of the mission, it was decided to conduct a night operation despite the extreme cold and heavy snowfall. The battalion formulated an operational plan, and a special commando team led by Captain R Harshan was tasked with cordoning off the suspected terrorist hideout. As the team moved in stealthily, they surrounded the suspected house, ensuring that no escape routes were left open. The operation was conducted under extremely challenging conditions, with low visibility and freezing temperatures, making it even more dangerous.
At 3:50 AM on March 20, 2007, the terrorists, realizing they were surrounded, attempted a desperate escape. Under the cover of darkness and heavy snowfall, four terrorists rushed out of the house, firing indiscriminately in an attempt to break the security cordon. This led to an intense and fierce gun battle between the soldiers and the terrorists. Lance Naik Bhawan Singh, displaying extraordinary courage and tactical acumen, held his ground despite the heavy gunfire. In the ensuing combat, he fought relentlessly, engaging the terrorists at close range. He managed to neutralize one of the heavily armed terrorists, preventing him from escaping and endangering civilian lives. However, in the course of the battle, he sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite his injuries, he continued fighting bravely, providing crucial support to his team. As the battle raged on, reinforcements arrived, and the remaining terrorists were eliminated. However, Captain R Harshan and Lance Naik Bhawan Singh succumbed to their injuries, making the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
Lance Naik Bhawan Singh’s bravery, selflessness, and unwavering dedication to the mission were instrumental in the successful completion of the operation. His fearless actions and indomitable spirit ensured that the terrorists were neutralized, preventing potential harm to civilians and fellow soldiers. In recognition of his extraordinary gallantry and supreme sacrifice, Lance Naik Bhawan Singh was posthumously awarded the "Shaurya Chakra", one of India’s highest peacetime gallantry awards
Lance Naik Bhawan Singh is survived by his wife Smt Geeta Devi.
