Lance Naik Anoop Kumar Sharma hailed from Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh. Son of Shri Ramshankar Sharma and Smt Rajindri Devi, L Nk Anoop Kumar joined the Army after completing his schooling. He was recruited into the Regiment of Artillery, the second largest arm of Indian Army with its motto “Sarvatra Izzat-o-Iqbal” meaning “Everywhere with Honour and Glory”.
After serving with few years with his parent unit L Nk Anoop Kumar was deputed to serve with 30 Rashtriya Rifles battalion, deployed in J & K for counter-insurgency operations.
Baramulla Operation : 07 May 2010
During 2010, L Nk Anoop Kumar Sharma’s unit was deployed in J & K and was engaged in operations against the militants on a frequent basis. The unit was operating in the terrorist infested area of Baramulla district and had to maintain a very high state of alert at all times to deal with the thereat of militants. On the night of 06/07 May 2010, L/Nk Anoop Kumar’s unit had received information from the intelligence sources about the presence of terrorists in a village in Baramulla district. It was decided to launch a search and destroy operation to flush out the terrorists. Accordingly multiple ambushes and search parties were launched in the suspected area. L Nk Anoop Kumar was part of one such party and was functioning as scout for the assault team.
Around at 0500 hours L Nk Anoop Kumar observed some suspicious movement led his party in that direction. However the terrorists opened indiscriminate fire on being challenged. Realizing the safety of his comrades to be at stake, L Nk Anoop Kumar, with utter disregard to personal safety, retaliated with effective fire and dashed towards the terrorists. In spite of being grievously injured in the process with his effective and accurate fire, L Nk Anoop Kumar managed to eliminate two terrorists before falling unconscious. He later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. Lance Naik Anoop displayed indomitable courage, determination and devotion to duty and laid down his life in the service of the nation.
L Nk Anoop Kumar Sharma was given the gallantry award, “Shaurya Chakra” for his outstanding bravery, fighting spirit and supreme sacrifice. He is survived by his father Shri Ramshankar Sharma and mother Smt Rajindri Devi.
The Citation for Shaurya Chakra awarded to him reads:
On the night of 06/07 May, 2010 surveillance cum multiple ambushes were launched based on inputs about the presence of terrorists in a general area in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. Lance Naik Anoop Kumar Sharma was the scout of one such party. On 07 May, 2010 around 0500 hours Sharma observed suspicious movement. Upon being challenged, the terrorists opened indiscriminate fire. Realizing the safety of his comrades to be at stake, Sharma, with utter disregard to personal safety, retaliated with effective fire and dashed towards the terrorists. In spite of being grievously injured in the process with his effective and accurate fire the individual eliminated two terrorists before falling unconscious. Lance Naik Anoop Kumar Sharma displayed indomitable determination and exceptional bravery and made the supreme sacrifice for the nation.
